Cars

Although you are allowed to import your own car, it is not recommended, due to the difficulties in obtaining spare parts and adequate servicing. However, a car is desirable if you are staying in Brazil for any length of time and you are entitled to purchase one as long as you possess a passport. There is a range of cars available, but there is often a delay in delivery, due to the short demand. The average cost of a Ford Escort, for example is Cr$ 72 mn, annual insurance averages Cr$ 5.4mn, road tax is Cr$ 1.7mn and the cost of a routine service excluding parts is Cr$ 818000.

A foreign driving licence is valid for six months, although a certificate of validity must be obtained from the Brazilian driving authorities. (A translation will be required).
