CHILE – IMPORT REGULATIONS

At the time of compiling this information sheet the following documentation is required to import household effects into Chile:

You will be required to supply the following, prior to the departure of your effects from our depot, which should be submitted either prior to, or upon completion of packing at residence: 

  • Original Bill of Lading  
  • Detailed inventory 
  • Original passport 
  • Customs declaration. An appraised listing, signed by the consignee, indicating trade-marks, models and year of acquisition, (completed at destination) 

For Chilean citizens returning:

  • All the above mentioned 
  • Certificado de viajes, issued by "Policia Intemacional" in Santiago. (It must be obtained after arrival in the country)

Duty free entry: 

  • Travel articles 
  • Clothing 
  • Electrical appliances 
  • Personal effects or decorations, which are worn or used and that serve to meet the ordinary uses and needs of the person importing them and not for sales purposes 
  • Household goods returning to the country 

Value Added Tax: 

  • All merchandise except personal effects are affected by Value Added Tax 

Duties and Taxes:  

  • Foreign citizens with a contract visa or temporary visa for more than one year can import    US$ 5,000. - FOB value of household goods or personal effects, free of duties/taxes 
  • Chilean citizens with more than five years abroad can import US$ 5,000.- FOB value free of duties/taxes 
  • Chilean citizens with more than one year abroad can import US $3,000.- FOB value free of duties/taxes 
  • as Chilean Customs value most goods with a low value it is possible to import a 2Oft container of normal household goods within US$ 5,000 

NB.       Any personal effects that enter the country 120 days after the arrival of the consignee, will be affected by Customs Duties.

Prohibited Items:

  • Medicines, narcotics and drugs
  • Soil
  • Pornographic movies, video cassettes, books or others

 Restricted Items:  

  • Arms, ammunition and dangerous objects  
  • Plants 

Motor Cars

Documents Required:

  • Original endorsed OBL
  • Vehicle’s identification certificate purchase invoice
  • Ownership certificate
  • International Police certificate
  • Final cost certificate
  • Internal taxes
  • Passport

Used vehicles

Importer must be of Chilean nationality, having remained abroad for over one year without a dissolution of continuity. The duties to be paid vary according to the capacity of the motor (in cc).

New vehicles

Subject to the authorisation of the Central Bank (Banco Central).
