How do removals to Luxembourg from the UK work?
Removals to Luxembourg from the UK run door to door by road and typically take 6 to 12 days from collection to delivery. We pack and collect at your UK address, prepare the customs paperwork, and deliver to your Luxembourg address. You can book a dedicated vehicle or share one as a part load.
It is one of the shortest routes we run. Luxembourg is a few hours beyond the Channel crossing, through northern France or Belgium, so it sits at the shorter end of that window more often than not.
Is a dedicated vehicle worth it on a route this short?
Often yes, and that is unusual. Because Luxembourg is close, a dedicated vehicle costs less than it would on a long route, so the premium over a shared load is smaller than most people expect, and you get your own dates instead of waiting for a vehicle to fill.
A part load is still the cheaper option and the right answer for a small flat or a few rooms. Ask for both figures at quote stage, because on this route the gap between them is narrow enough to be worth seeing.
What is included in a removal to Luxembourg?
Packing in export-grade materials, a labelled inventory of everything in the shipment, collection from your UK address, the road freight itself as a dedicated vehicle or a part load, the customs paperwork at both ends, and delivery to your Luxembourg address. Unpacking and furniture placement are available on request.
How long do removals to Luxembourg take?
Road freight to Luxembourg typically takes 6 to 12 days from collection to delivery, with a dedicated vehicle at the shorter end and a shared load at the longer end, because a shared load waits for other consignments before it departs.
Where a full-size lorry cannot reach the door, or a city centre restricts vehicle size and delivery hours, the final leg transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle. Luxembourg City has plenty of streets in that category.
Do I pay duty on my belongings going into Luxembourg?
Usually no, under the EU transfer of residence relief. You need to have lived outside the EU for at least twelve continuous months, to have owned and used the goods for at least six months before you left, and to import them within twelve months of establishing residence in Luxembourg.
The relief does not cover alcoholic drinks, tobacco, commercial vehicles or equipment for a trade. For twelve months after release the goods cannot be lent, hired out, used as security or sold without telling customs first.
What documents do I need for removals to Luxembourg?
A valid passport copy for everyone moving, proof of your address in Luxembourg, proof of your previous UK address, a detailed inventory listing everything in the shipment with values, and a signed declaration that the goods are personal effects and not for resale.
We prepare the shipping paperwork and tell you which of your own documents to have ready and when.
Which parts of Luxembourg do you deliver to?
We deliver across the whole country, which is small enough that nowhere is far from anywhere. Most moves go to Luxembourg City, and we also deliver to Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange, Dudelange, Ettelbruck, Diekirch, Strassen, Bertrange, Mersch and Echternach.
What can I ship to Luxembourg?
Household goods, furniture, boxes and personal effects, along with fragile and high-value items such as glassware, artwork and antiques, which are reinforced-packed or crated. Vehicles travel alongside a household shipment or on their own.
Aerosols, paints, solvents, gas bottles and fuel cannot be carried on any removal vehicle, and plants and anything with soil on it are restricted.
What sets the price of removals to Luxembourg?
Four things: the volume of your belongings, whether you book a dedicated vehicle or share one, how much packing you want us to do, and access at both ends. On a short route the volume and the access matter more than the distance does.
What are the steps of a removal to Luxembourg?
Five stages: a free quote based on your volume and dates, a survey online or in person to check access and anything fragile, packing and a labelled inventory at your UK address, the road leg with customs cleared at both ends, then delivery with unpacking if you want it.
Why choose Removals.co.uk for removals to Luxembourg?
We have completed over 10,000 moves, we are rated 4.6 out of 5 from 110 reviews on Trustpilot, and we are members of Approved Movers in the UK, working only with overseas agents who are members of BAR or FIDI. Every move gets one named coordinator.
Quotes are free, itemised and carry no obligation, and our own yard and storage at Fazeley covers the gap when your dates at either end do not line up.
Luxembourg is landlocked, so what does that mean for my move?
It means everything travels by road, which on this route is an advantage rather than a limitation. Luxembourg has no seaport, but it is only a few hours beyond the Channel crossing, so the drive that would be a drawback on a Baltic move is the fastest option here.
The practical effect is that there is no sea-versus-road decision to make. The only questions are whether you book a dedicated vehicle or share one, and how much packing you want. Because the distance is short, a dedicated vehicle is cheaper here than almost anywhere else we run, which is why it is worth asking for both figures.
It also means one customs event and no port charges. Your goods cross a land border and are delivered, with nothing sitting on a quay waiting for a slot.
Who clears my shipment at the Luxembourg end?
The Directorate of Customs and Excise, the Administration des douanes et accises, handles customs in Luxembourg, and our agent lodges the import declaration against your inventory. You do not deal with the authority yourself.
Luxembourg is worth one specific warning. A very large share of the people working there live over the border in Belgium, France or Germany, so if your job is in Luxembourg City but your home will be outside it, tell us at survey. The delivery address decides the customs country, not the employer, and a shipment declared to the wrong country is a genuinely expensive mistake to unpick.
On the residence side, a British national moving to Luxembourg is now a third-country national rather than an EU citizen, so the arrival declaration deadlines quoted for EU citizens do not apply. Check the current GOV.UK guidance before you fix dates, and your coordinator will confirm the document list at quote stage.

Removals to Luxembourg: frequently asked questions
My job is in Luxembourg but my home will be in France or Belgium. What then?
Tell us at survey, because the delivery address decides which country your shipment is declared to, not where you work. A great many people employed in Luxembourg live across the border, and a consignment declared to the wrong country is slow and expensive to put right.
Do you deliver into Luxembourg City's narrow streets?
Yes. Plenty of the older streets restrict vehicle size and delivery hours, so the final leg often transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle. Give us the street and the floor at survey and it is built into the plan.
Can you move just a few pieces of furniture to Luxembourg?
Yes, and on a route this short it is straightforward. A wardrobe, a sofa or a dozen boxes travel as a part load and you pay for the space they occupy. Ask for the dedicated figure too, because the gap is often narrower than people expect.
Can you pack for me?
Yes. Our packers wrap and box everything in export-grade materials and can unpack at the Luxembourg end, and we can drop materials off beforehand if you would rather do it yourself.
Can I ship a car to Luxembourg?
Yes, either with your household goods or on its own. Duty relief depends on having owned and used the vehicle before the move, and you will need to register it locally once it arrives. Our vehicle shipping page sets out the process.
Do you offer storage if my dates do not line up?
Yes, at our own yard at Riverside Industrial Estate in Fazeley, Tamworth. Because Luxembourg is close, a short stay in storage and a later delivery is usually easy to arrange rather than a major change to the plan.
Is my shipment insured?
Our crews are fully insured, and transit insurance covering loss or damage on the journey is available as an option. Your quote sets out the cover and the cost so you can decide before collection.
