How do removals to Dubai from the UK work?

You can move household goods from the UK to Dubai by sea container or air freight, clearing through Jebel Ali. Your household goods enter duty-free as a transfer of residence. However, only after your UAE residence visa is issued, your visa date, not the sailing date, usually determines your delivery date.

How long do removals to Dubai take?

Sea freight to Dubai typically takes 4 to 6 weeks from the UK, depending on whether you book a shared or a dedicated container. Air freight is the faster option. In practice, your UAE residence visa, not the sailing, usually determines when your belongings are delivered.

Is air freight worth it to Dubai?

Air freight is the fastest way to ship your valuable belongings to Dubai. If you are short on time or need valuable items to arrive quickly, air freight is a great option. It’s more expensive than other options, but it’s ideal for urgent, small shipments.

At Removals.co.uk, we also work with trusted international shipping partners to ensure your belongings are delivered securely.

When should I choose sea freight to Dubai?

Sea freight is often used for larger consignments and long-term relocations. We recommend booking in advance, as it is slower than air freight but more affordable and a better fit for entire house removals.

We have two options for this:

Shared Container:  Ideal for small moves like a studio or one-bedroom flat. We pack and load all your belongings into a shared 20ft or 40ft shipping container to Dubai, and you pay only for the space your removal boxes occupy.

Dedicated Container:  You get an entire 20ft or 40ft container, ideal for larger homes or commercial relocations. This option is more private and lets you control packing and timing. You pay for a full shipping container.

We ship to over 200 destinations and handle everything from packing to customs clearance to final delivery.

Should I use a full container, a part load or air freight to Dubai?

Ways to ship your belongings to Dubai

Do I need a UAE residence visa before my shipment arrives?

In the UAE, your belongings usually cannot clear customs until your residence visa is issued and you are in the country. This is the most common reason a Dubai shipment sits at Jebel Ali and incurs storage charges, and it is a sequencing issue rather than a shipping one.

The order matters. You normally arrive on an entry permit, complete the medical, apply for your Emirates ID, and only then is the residence visa issued. Until that last step is done, your household goods cannot be cleared as a transfer of residence, which is the status that lets personal effects in without duty.

Sea freight to Dubai is not the slow part of that chain. Your paperwork is. So the useful question when you book is not how fast the container can sail, but when your visa is realistically going to be stamped, and then working backwards from it. A container waiting at Jebel Ali for a visa is the most expensive storage unit you will ever rent.

If your start date is fixed and your visa is not, send a few boxes by air freight to live out of and let the sea shipment follow. It is worth raising your visa timeline when you book, because sailing a fortnight later usually costs much less than arriving a fortnight early.

How do I ship my furniture to Dubai?

Furniture ships to Dubai by sea in a shared container for a studio or one-bedroom flat, or in a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container for a larger home. We professionally pack and wrap it, clear it through Jebel Ali, and it takes 4 to 6 weeks.

Sea freight is priced by the space your belongings take up, not their value, so your furnitureis volume determines the cost, and a home survey measures it accurately rather than guessing. It is also why the next question on this page matters: most Dubai rentals come part furnished or fully furnished, and wardrobes are very often built in, so it is worth checking your tenancy contract before you pay to ship a sofa or a wardrobe that the flat already has.

What is worth shipping to Dubai?

The UAE runs on 220 to 240 volts and uses the same three-pin plug as the UK. Your kettle, television and lamps will all work straight out of the box, with no transformer or adaptors. That is not true of a move to the USA or Canada.

So electricals are usually worth bringing, which flips the advice you may have read for other destinations. Furniture is where it gets less obvious. Most Dubai rentals come part-furnished or fully furnished, and wardrobes are often built in, so read your tenancy contract before you pay to ship a sofa and a wardrobe across an ocean to a flat that already has both.

The freestanding wardrobe is the classic regret. It costs more to ship than to replace, and more often than not, it will not fit the room anyway.

Sea freight is priced on the space your things take up, not what they are worth, so the only question worth asking about any bulky item is whether it costs more to ship than to replace once you are there. Anything you would not buy again is a candidate for selling before you go, and a home survey is the moment to ask that out loud.

What documents do I need for removals to Dubai?

Dubai Customs asks for three things: a copy of your passport, a copy of your residency visa, and a written list of the goods you are importing. There is no numbered form and no notarised inventory. Because your residency visa is on that list, your furniture cannot clear until the visa is in place.

Dubai Customs asks for three things, and the list is shorter than people expect:

  • A copy of your passport
  • A copy of your residency visa
  • A written list of the goods you are importing

That is it. No numbered form, no notarised inventory, no agent’s stamp.

The catch is the middle one. Your residency visa is on the list, which is why your furniture cannot clear before your visa exists. This isn’t a scheduling preference on our part. Dubai Customs will ask for it, and you will not have it.

The third item is doing more work than it looks. Customs inspectors read your written list when they decide whether your shipment is a household move or a business importing stock. Used personal and household items are free of duty. Anything judged to be in commercial quantities attracts 5 per cent.

So twelve identical new kettles are a bad line on an inventory, however innocent the reason. A proper survey list, itemised and described, is what keeps your move on the household side of that judgement.

What can you not ship to Dubai?

The UAE prohibits narcotic drugs, which includes prescription medicines containing controlled substances, gambling machines and devices of any kind, live swine, used or retreaded tyres, indecent or obscene material, betel leaves and nasvaar, and counterfeit goods of any kind. Most trouble comes from ordinary items, not anything deliberate.

Every country has a prohibited list. The UAE’s list includes a few items that catch British movers out, because they are things nobody thinks twice about at home.

The prohibited list includes:

  • All narcotic drugs, which include prescription medicines containing controlled substances. Check anything you take regularly before it is packed
  • Gambling machines and devices of any kind. A poker set is a poker set
  • Live swine, and pork products are restricted rather than freely imported
  • Used, reconditioned or retreaded tyres. The spare in the garage counts
  • Indecent or obscene material of any kind, a category interpreted more broadly than it is in the UK
  • Betel leaves and nasvaar
  • Counterfeit goods of any kind, including the handbag someone bought on holiday years ago and forgot was a copy

N.othing on that list is exotic. That is the point. The items that cause trouble are almost always ordinary things in the back of a cupboard, not anything anyone set out to smuggle.

If you are unsure about a specific item, ask us before it goes in a box. It is a two-minute conversation ,and it is considerably cheaper than a customs hold.

Can you ship alcohol to Dubai?

Alcohol in an unaccompanied household shipment is a restricted import and is treated separately from the duty-free allowance you carry through the airport yourself. We advise against putting alcohol in the container at all. Drinks cabinets are a recurring reason a Dubai container is held, and that cost lands on you.

This is the one worth reading slowly, because two different sets of rules get confused constantly.

The duty-free allowance you have read about is for travellers. It covers what you carry through the airport yourself, in person, with your passport in your hand. Dubai Customs publishes those limits, and they are worth checking before you fly.

They don’t apply to shipping.

Alcohol in an unaccompanied household shipment is a restricted import and is treated separately from anything you are allowed to carry in yourself. Drink cabinets are a recurring reason a Dubai container gets held, and you pay the cost of that hold.

Our advice is unglamorous, and it has not changed in years: do not put alcohol in the container. Wine collections rarely survive a Gulf summer in a steel box anyway, and the ones that do are seldom worth what the delay costs.

If you have something genuinely valuable, please tell us before the survey, and we will talk through the options rather than guess.

Removals to Dubai: frequently asked questions

How long does shipping to Dubai take?

Sea freight to the UAE takes 4 to 6 weeks, depending on whether you book a shared or a dedicated container. Air freight is much faster and is often used for a small consignment of essentials, with the bulk following by sea.

A copy of your passport and your UAE residency visa or Emirates ID. This matters for timing: shipments generally need to be cleared in the name of someone with an already-issued residency, so the paperwork has to align with your arrival rather than follow it.

The UAE has stricter restrictions than most destinations. Alcohol, pork products, and materials considered religiously or politically sensitive are prohibited. Medicines may need prior approval. Aerosols, paints, solvents and fuel cannot travel on any shipment. Raise anything uncertain at survey rather than at the port.

Vehicles can be shipped, but import rules and duties apply, and requirements change. Confirm the current position before booking. See vehicle shipping.

A part load suits apartments and smaller consignments; a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container suits a full household and clears faster. See container sizes and costs.

Yes, we handle customs clearance for international removals to Dubai. Our coordinators manage the paperwork that UAE customs requires, so your shipment clears without delay on arrival.

Several factors affect shipping prices to Dubai: how much you’re sending, which container you choose and whether you choose air or sea freight. The easiest way to know for sure is a free survey; we’ll quote based on what you’re actually moving, not a guess.
