How do removals to the Czech Republic from the UK work?

Removals to the Czech Republic from the UK go by road, in a dedicated van for your household alone or a part load sharing a lorry. We survey your home, pack and wrap everything, handle the customs paperwork for the Brexit border, and drive down through Germany to your new address.

This is one of the more straightforward European routes. The Czech Republic is in the EU single market, the roads are good the whole way, and there is one customs event rather than several.

One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery, and the inventory built at the survey is what the entry is declared against.

How long do removals to the Czech Republic take?

Road freight to the Czech Republic typically takes 6 to 12 days from collection to delivery. A dedicated vehicle sits at the shorter end because it drives straight there, while a shared load sits at the longer end, because it waits for other consignments before it departs.

That is the honest range rather than a best case. If the date has to be fixed, a dedicated van is what gives you one.

Prague, Brno and Ostrava all sit on good motorway connections, so the inland leg is rarely what moves a Czech delivery date.

Do I pay duty on my belongings going into the Czech Republic?

Used household goods normally come in free of duty and import VAT under the EU transfer of residence relief, which exists because you are moving your home rather than importing goods. Since Brexit this is a customs matter rather than an automatic right, so the relief has to be claimed properly.

The conditions are set out in EU law and they are the same across the bloc. You need to have had your normal residence outside the EU customs territory for at least twelve continuous months; the goods must have been owned and used for at least six months before you left; and they must be imported within twelve months of establishing your new residence. For twelve months after release they cannot be lent, hired out, pledged or sold without notifying customs.

The relief does not cover alcohol, tobacco, commercial means of transport, or equipment for a trade or profession beyond portable instruments of the applied or liberal arts.

In practice the inventory and the proof of your twelve months abroad are what the whole claim rests on, which is why both are prepared before anything is loaded.

What documents do I need for removals to the Czech Republic?

You will need your passport, proof of your new Czech address, evidence that you lived outside the EU for the previous twelve months, and a detailed inventory with values. Anyone staying longer than three months also registers their residence with the Czech authorities after arrival.

Proof of the twelve months abroad is the piece worth gathering early. Tenancy agreements, council tax records or utility bills covering the whole period are the usual evidence, and they are far harder to obtain once you have moved out of the property.

Your coordinator tells you exactly what is needed for your situation rather than handing you a generic list, because a British citizen moving for work and one returning after years abroad are not asked for the same things.

Which route do you take to the Czech Republic?

Your load crosses the Channel and runs east through Belgium and Germany before entering the Czech Republic by road. The country is landlocked, so road is the sensible option for a household move and sea freight does not come into it.

Being landlocked simplifies the move rather than complicating it. There is no port handling, no quay charges and no waiting for a sailing, which is why a Czech move is usually quicker than a comparable distance to a destination that needs a ship.

Tell your coordinator the delivery address and the access, and the vehicle plan is built around it.

Can I send a part load to the Czech Republic?

Yes. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings actually take on a shared lorry rather than hiring a whole vehicle, which suits anything smaller than a full house. It is the most common way people move to the Czech Republic from the UK.

The trade-off is the schedule rather than the care. A shared load waits for other consignments before it departs, so a dedicated van is the option with a fixed date.

The survey settles which fits and we quote both so you can see the difference. There is more on our part load removals page.

Which parts of the Czech Republic do you deliver to?

We deliver across the country, including Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Plzen, Olomouc, Liberec, Ceske Budejovice, Hradec Kralove and Pardubice, as well as smaller towns reached by road from those cities. Prague, Brno and Ostrava all sit on good motorway connections, so the drive from the border is predictable wherever in the country you are heading.

The historic centres are the access question worth raising early. Prague’s old town in particular has narrow streets, restricted vehicle access and limited delivery windows, and the same is true of parts of Cesky Krumlov and Brno.

Where a full-size lorry cannot reach the door, the final leg transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle, which goes in the quote rather than appearing as an extra on the day.

What sets the price of removals to the Czech Republic?

How much you are sending, whether you book a dedicated van or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, and the access at both ends. A shuttle transfer into a historic centre or a flat with no lift adds crew and time.

Road freight is priced on the space your belongings occupy rather than their weight, which is why the survey beats a phone estimate and why deciding what to leave behind is the most reliable saving.

We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.

On the same corridor we run removals to Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovakia, and every European route is on our European removals page. Sending less than a full household? See part load removals.

Removals to the Czech Republic: frequently asked questions

Is the Czech Republic still easy to move to after Brexit?

Yes, though it is now a customs move rather than a simple one. The EU transfer of residence relief is what keeps used household goods free of duty and import VAT, and it is claimed as part of the clearance rather than granted automatically.

If you are staying longer than three months, yes. Registering your residence with the Czech authorities is a separate matter from your shipment, but the address you register is usually the one on your customs paperwork, so the two are worth keeping consistent.

Frequently not. Narrow streets, bollards and restricted delivery hours are normal in the historic centres, so the final leg often transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle. Tell us the address at the survey and it is planned in.

Vehicle shipping is a service we offer, and a vehicle can qualify for relief on a genuine transfer of residence, but it is handled separately from your furniture and has its own registration requirements once there. See our vehicle shipping page.

Alcohol and tobacco are outside the relief, as are commercial vehicles and equipment for a trade or profession beyond portable instruments. Aerosols, flammable liquids and gas bottles cannot travel at all. Your surveyor will go through it.

Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is useful when the completion date at the Czech end moves. Holding goods in the UK is usually simpler and cheaper than arranging storage abroad.

Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
