How do removals to San Marino from the UK work?
Removals to San Marino from the UK go by road, in a dedicated van or a part load sharing a lorry. We survey, pack and wrap everything, drive down through France and Italy, and handle the customs entry, which is made on the Italian side because San Marino sits inside the EU customs territory through its union with the EU.
San Marino is entirely surrounded by Italy, and for customs purposes that matters more than its independence does. There is no separate frontier formality on arrival at the Republic itself.
One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery, and the access survey is what decides the vehicle plan.
How long do removals to San Marino take?
Road freight to San Marino typically takes 6 to 12 days from collection to delivery. A dedicated vehicle sits at the shorter end because it drives straight there, while a shared load sits at the longer end, because it waits for other consignments before it departs.
That is the honest range rather than a best case. If the date has to be fixed, a dedicated van is the option that gives you one.
On this route the paperwork rarely moves the date. The hilltop access at the delivery end is far more likely to shape the day.
Do I pay duty on my belongings going into San Marino?
San Marino sits inside the EU customs territory through a customs union, and goods bound for the Republic are cleared through Italy. For used household goods accompanying a genuine change of residence, the EU transfer of residence relief is the framework that applies.
The conditions are the EU ones. You need to have had your normal residence outside the EU customs territory for at least twelve continuous months; the goods must have been owned and used for at least six months before you left; and they must be imported within twelve months of establishing your new residence. For twelve months afterwards they cannot be lent, hired out, pledged or sold without telling customs.
The relief does not cover alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles, or equipment for a trade or profession beyond portable instruments.
San Marino also runs its own residence system, which is separate from the customs position and notably restrictive. Your coordinator confirms how the two fit together with our agent before you travel.
What documents do I need for removals to San Marino?
You will need your passport, evidence of your San Marino residence or the application in progress, proof that you lived outside the EU for the previous twelve months, and a detailed inventory with values. The declaration itself is made on the Italian side.
Proof of the twelve months abroad is the piece worth gathering early. Tenancy agreements, council tax records or utility bills covering the whole period are the usual evidence, and they are far harder to obtain once you have moved out.
San Marino’s own residence rules are a separate matter from the shipment, but the two are planned together because one generally has to be settled before the other makes sense.
Which route do you take to San Marino?
Your load crosses the Channel and runs south through France and northern Italy to the Adriatic coast near Rimini, then climbs the few miles inland to the Republic. There is one customs event on the journey rather than a second formality at the San Marino boundary.
That makes the paperwork simpler than for a genuinely non-EU destination, and it is the reason a San Marino move usually runs more like an Italian one than like a move to Andorra or Liechtenstein.
Tell your coordinator the delivery address and the access, especially if it is in the historic centre, and the vehicle plan is built around it.
Can I send a part load to San Marino?
Yes. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings actually take on a shared lorry rather than hiring a whole vehicle, which suits anything smaller than a full house and is the usual choice on this route.
The trade-off is the schedule rather than the care. A shared load waits for other consignments before it departs, so a dedicated van is the one that gives you a fixed date.
The survey settles which fits and we quote both. There is more on our part load removals page.
Which parts of San Marino do you deliver to?
We deliver throughout the Republic, including the City of San Marino on Mount Titano, Borgo Maggiore, Serravalle, Domagnano, Fiorentino, Acquaviva, Faetano, Chiesanuova and Montegiardino. The country covers about 61 square kilometres, so access rather than distance is the whole question.
The historic city on the summit is the hard part. Its streets are narrow, steep and in places pedestrianised, with vehicle restrictions that rule out a full-size lorry entirely. Serravalle and the lower settlements are far more straightforward.
Where a lorry cannot reach the door, the final leg transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle, which is planned into the quote rather than appearing as an extra on the day.
What sets the price of removals to San Marino?
How much you are sending, whether you book a dedicated van or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, and above all the access at the far end. A delivery up on Mount Titano needing a shuttle transfer costs more than one in Serravalle.
Road freight is priced on the space your belongings occupy rather than their weight, which is why the survey beats a phone estimate.
We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.
On the same route we run removals to Italy, Croatia and Austria, and every European route is on our European removals page. Sending less than a full household? See part load removals.

Removals to San Marino: frequently asked questions
Is San Marino inside the EU customs area?
Yes, through a customs union, even though it is not an EU member state. Your shipment clears through Italy, so the paperwork looks like an Italian move rather than a separate country’s.
Can a lorry get up to the old city?
No. The streets on Mount Titano are narrow, steep and partly pedestrianised with vehicle restrictions, so the final leg transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle. That is normal here rather than exceptional.
How long do I have to bring my things in?
Under the EU residence relief the goods should be imported within twelve months of establishing your new residence, and they must have been owned and used for at least six months before you left.
Is it hard to get San Marino residence?
It is notably restrictive, and it is a separate matter from the customs position. In practice the residence process usually has to be resolved before planning the shipment, so tell your coordinator where you are with it.
Can I bring my car?
Vehicle shipping is a service we offer, but a vehicle is handled separately from household effects and is not covered by the same relief. See our vehicle shipping page.
Can you store my things before they travel?
Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is useful while residence is being finalised, because holding goods here is simpler than arranging storage in such a small territory.
Is my shipment insured?
Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
