How do removals to Saudi Arabia from the UK work?

Removals to Saudi Arabia from the UK go by sea, in either a full container of your own or a part load sharing space with other households. We survey your home, pack and wrap everything, handle the export paperwork here, and work with a licensed Saudi broker who applies for your duty exemption and clears the shipment on your behalf.

The shipping is the simple half. The part that decides whether your move runs smoothly is the clearance, because Saudi Arabia inspects household shipments thoroughly and the paperwork has to match what is in the boxes.

You get one coordinator from survey to delivery, and the inventory we build at the survey is the document your broker clears against.

How long do removals to Saudi Arabia take?

Your transit time is confirmed in writing on your quote, because it depends on the sailing schedule, whether you book a full container or a part load, and which Saudi port suits your delivery address. A part load always takes longer, because it waits for the container to fill before it sails.

We would rather give you the real date for your booking than a range that turns out to be wrong for your route. What we will say plainly is where the risk sits on this route, and it is customs inspection at the Saudi end rather than the crossing itself.

Do I pay duty on my belongings going into Saudi Arabia?

Used personal and household effects are normally exempt from customs duty for an expatriate arriving to live in Saudi Arabia for the first time. Two things catch people out: the exemption usually applies to your first shipment only, and VAT can still be assessed on the value of the goods even where duty is not.

The exemption is not automatic. Your customs broker has to apply for it as part of the clearance, and the authority decides on the strength of your documents. That is why an accurate, valued inventory matters more here than on most routes, and why we build yours at the survey rather than at the warehouse door.

Where goods do not qualify, normal rates apply and they are not trivial, so it is worth budgeting for the possibility rather than assuming the exemption. Anything bought new shortly before the move is the most likely thing to be questioned, and you may be asked for purchase receipts on electrical and electronic items. If you cannot produce them, the value can be assessed for you.

These conditions come from published guidance and mover country guides rather than from a figure we have invented, and some of that guidance is a few years old. Your coordinator confirms the current position with our Saudi broker before your goods sail, and we would always have you check anything date-sensitive with them too.

What documents do I need for removals to Saudi Arabia?

You will need your passport with the entry visa page, a copy of your Iqama residence permit, the original bill of lading, and a detailed inventory with a value against every item. Purchase receipts for electrical and electronic goods are commonly requested on this route.

Your broker also needs to be authorised to act for you in the Saudi customs system before anything can be cleared, which is arranged in advance rather than on the day. Shipments are subject to full physical inspection, so a vague inventory is the single most common reason a container sits at the port.

If your Iqama is not issued yet when the goods arrive, say so early. It changes the timing of the whole clearance and it is far better handled before the container sails than after it lands.

Which Saudi port will my shipment arrive at?

Most household shipments from the UK arrive at Jeddah on the Red Sea coast, which serves the west of the Kingdom including Mecca and Medina. For Riyadh, Dammam, Khobar and the Eastern Province, routing through Dammam on the Gulf is usually the better choice.

Saudi Arabia is large enough that the port genuinely changes your delivery date and your cost, because the inland leg can be several hundred kilometres. Riyadh sits roughly in the middle, so it can be served from either coast depending on sailing schedules.

Tell your coordinator the delivery city and the access at the other end, including whether a full-size lorry can reach the building and whether there are compound or gate restrictions, and the routing is planned around that.

Can I send a part load to Saudi Arabia?

Yes. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings actually take inside a shared container rather than hiring a whole one, which suits anything smaller than a full house. It is the most common way people move to Saudi Arabia from the UK.

The trade-off is time rather than care. Your goods are packed and protected exactly the same way, but a shared container waits until it is full before it sails. A full container of your own sails when you are ready.

The survey settles which fits. We measure the volume and quote both so you can see the difference before deciding. There is more on how shared containers work on our part load removals page.

Which parts of Saudi Arabia do you deliver to?

We deliver across the Kingdom, including Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Al Khobar, Dhahran, Mecca, Medina, Yanbu, Jubail, Tabuk and Abha, as well as compounds and smaller towns reached by road from those cities. The south west adds a longer inland drive than the main corridors.

Compound deliveries are worth flagging early. Many expatriate compounds have their own access rules, vehicle size limits and delivery windows, and a crew turned away at the gate costs you a day.

Where a full-size lorry cannot reach the door, the final leg transfers to a smaller vehicle. Tell us what the access is like and it goes in the quote rather than appearing as a surprise on the day.

What sets the price of removals to Saudi Arabia?

Four things: how much you are sending, whether you book a full container or a part load, which Saudi port and city you are delivering to, and how much packing you want us to do. Access at both ends matters too, because a long carry or a compound with restrictions takes more crew and more time.

Sea freight is priced on the space your belongings occupy rather than what they weigh, which is why the survey matters more than a guess over the phone, and why decluttering genuinely saves money on a route this long.

We quote in writing with the inclusions listed. If something is excluded it says so, rather than appearing later.

Moving elsewhere in the Gulf? We also run removals to Dubai, the UAE and Bahrain, and you can compare every route from our Asia and Middle East destinations page. If you are sending less than a full household, part load removals explains how shared containers work.

Removals to Saudi Arabia: frequently asked questions

Is the duty exemption guaranteed?

No, and we would not promise it. It is applied for by your broker as part of clearance and decided on your documents, so the honest answer is that it is normal for a first-time resident with complete paperwork and not automatic. Budget for the possibility of tax being assessed.

It is far better to have it. A copy of your residence permit is one of the documents the clearance runs on, and if it is not issued yet the shipment can wait at the port. Tell your coordinator early and the sailing can be planned around it.

Vehicle shipping is a service we offer, but a vehicle is treated completely separately from household effects and does not come in under the same allowance. Ask your coordinator before planning around it, and see our vehicle shipping page.

Alcohol, pork products, anything of a religious nature from another faith, and material that would not pass inspection are the obvious ones on this route, alongside the usual sea freight restrictions on aerosols, flammable liquids and gas bottles. Your surveyor will go through the list.

Expect it. Household shipments into Saudi Arabia are routinely given a full physical inspection, which is exactly why the inventory has to be accurate and itemised rather than listing six boxes as miscellaneous.

Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire. That is often useful here, because it lets you hold the shipment in the UK until your residence paperwork is through rather than paying storage at the Saudi end.

Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. It is explained in full in our guide to removals insurance.
