How do international removals to Qatar from the UK work?

International removals to Qatar from the UK go by sea, in a full container or a part load sharing space with other households. We survey, pack, handle the export side here, and work with a clearing agent in Doha who needs your residence permit and a letter from your employer before anything can be released.

Qatar is a short-paperwork, high-scrutiny route. There is not a great deal to gather, but what there is has to be exactly right, and your employer is part of the process in a way they are not on most destinations.

One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery, and the inventory built at the survey is what your agent clears against.

How long do removals to Qatar take?

Your transit time is confirmed in writing on your quote, because it depends on the sailing schedule and whether you book a full container or a part load. A shared container waits until it is full before it sails, so it always takes longer than a container of your own.

We would rather give you the real date for your booking than a range that proves wrong for your sailing. The part of this route most likely to move your date is clearance rather than the crossing, because every household shipment into Qatar is inspected.

International moving advice: planning a relocation timeline

Do I pay duty on my belongings going into Qatar?

Used household goods and personal effects brought in by a new resident are normally treated favourably, but the exemption is discretionary rather than automatic and depends on complete paperwork. Published guidance also sets a window: household items should be brought in within six months of your arrival.

Two further conditions are worth knowing before you pack. New residents may be asked to sign an undertaking not to sell the imported items for at least a year after entry, and brand new furniture and appliances may not qualify for the same treatment as used household effects. If you have just bought a new sofa for the move, that is the item most likely to be questioned.

Sources on the exact duty position for Qatar disagree with each other, and the rules were updated recently. Rather than pick whichever reading sounds best, we have your agent confirm the current position for your specific shipment before it sails, and your quote tells you what has been allowed for.

What documents do I need for removals to Qatar?

You will need a passport copy with your Qatar residence permit, a detailed itemised inventory, the bill of lading, and a no-objection letter in Arabic on your employer’s letterhead. A Qatari mobile number registered to your QID is also needed to authorise the clearing agent online.

The employer letter is the one people leave to the last minute, and it is the one that stops the clearance. It has to be in Arabic, on letterhead, and it has to match the name on the residence permit, so it is worth requesting it the week your move is booked.

Shipments are subject to full physical inspection, so the inventory needs to be itemised properly rather than summarised.

Which Qatari port will my shipment arrive at?

Household shipments from the UK arrive at Hamad Port, south of Doha, which is Qatar’s main deep-water port. Because the country is compact, the inland leg from the port to your door is short wherever in Qatar you are moving to.

That is genuinely different from most of our long-haul routes. On a move to Brazil or Saudi Arabia the inland drive can be a significant part of the cost; in Qatar almost everywhere is within an hour or so of the port, so the container filling and the clearance are what move your date rather than the drive.

Tell your coordinator the delivery address and the access, including tower block, villa compound or parking restrictions, and it goes in the quote.

Can I send a part load to Qatar?

Yes, and on a Qatar move it is often the sensible choice, because a lot of people arrive into furnished or part-furnished accommodation and send a modest shipment rather than a full household. You pay for the space your goods occupy rather than for a whole container.

Your goods are packed and protected exactly the same way. The difference is the schedule: a shared container sails when it is full, so the date moves with the other households in it.

If you are not sure which fits, the survey answers it. We quote both so you can see the difference. There is more on our part load removals page.

Which parts of Qatar do you deliver to?

We deliver across Qatar, including Doha, Al Rayyan, Lusail, Al Wakrah, Al Khor, Umm Salal, Mesaieed and Dukhan, as well as the compounds and tower developments most new arrivals move into. Nowhere in the country is far from the port.

Tower blocks and gated compounds are the access question worth raising early. Lift bookings, loading bay slots and permitted delivery hours are common, and a crew that arrives outside the window loses the day.

Where a full-size lorry cannot reach the building, the final leg transfers to a smaller vehicle, which is planned into the quote rather than sprung on you.

What sets the price of removals to Qatar?

How much you are sending, whether you book a full container or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, and the access at both ends. Because the inland leg in Qatar is short, volume and packing carry more of the price here than distance does.

Sea freight is priced on the space your belongings occupy rather than their weight, so the survey is what makes a quote real. Deciding what not to take is the most reliable way to bring the figure down.

We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.

Moving elsewhere in the Gulf? We also run removals to Dubai, the UAE and Bahrain, and every route is listed on our Asia and Middle East destinations page. Sending less than a full household? Part load removals explains shared containers.

Removals to Qatar: frequently asked questions

Does my employer have to be involved?

Yes, on most Qatar moves. A no-objection letter in Arabic on your employer’s letterhead is a standard clearance document, and it has to match the name on your residence permit. Request it as soon as your move is booked rather than when the container lands.

Published guidance says household items should be brought in within six months of your arrival in Qatar, which is why we plan the sailing around your start date. If your move is going to fall outside that, tell your coordinator early so it can be checked.

You can ship it, but new furniture and appliances may not be treated the same way as used household effects at customs. If you have bought new items for the move, flag them at the survey and keep the receipts with your paperwork.

Expect a full physical inspection. That is routine for household shipments into Qatar and it is the reason the inventory has to be itemised rather than summarised.

Yes, and it is most of what we do in Doha. Tell us the building at the survey so lift access, loading bays and permitted delivery hours are arranged in advance rather than discovered on the day.

Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is useful if your residence permit or accommodation is not settled yet. Holding goods in the UK is usually simpler than storing them at the far end.

Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
