Our team handles the final offloading and can help reassemble furniture, ensuring your relocation ends on a positive, organised note.
Our Freight Options While Moving to Italy from UK
Choosing the right transport method is essential for balancing your budget and your timeline. We provide three primary freight options, each designed to cater to different volumes of goods and delivery requirements.
Air Freight
Air freight is the best choice for those who need their belongings delivered to Italy as quickly as possible. While it is generally the most expensive option, it is ideal for smaller shipments, urgent documents, or essential household items that you cannot wait for. We handle the specialised packing required for air transit and coordinate with major airports to ensure rapid, secure delivery to your new Italian residence.
Sea Freight
If you are moving a large volume of goods or a full family home, sea freight offers a cost-effective, reliable solution. Your belongings are typically transported in shared (LCL) or dedicated (FCL) containers via major shipping routes to Italian ports such as Genoa or Naples. While sea transit takes longer than other methods, it remains the most economical way to move bulky furniture and large inventories over long distances.
Road Freight
Given Italy’s accessibility from the UK via the European road network, road freight is our most popular and versatile moving option. We offer both “dedicated” services for large moves that require a full vehicle and “part-load” services for those looking to share costs with other customers. This method balances speed and value, with regular departures ensuring your goods arrive in Italy on a predictable, efficient schedule.
Our Flexible Process for Shipping to Italy
Our moving process is built on transparency and flexibility, so you are supported every step of the way. We have refined our workflow to be as straightforward as possible, keeping you informed and in control throughout the relocation.
Move Consultation
The process begins with an in-depth consultation and a pre-move survey, either in person or via a virtual video link. During this stage, we assess the volume of your goods, identify any specialist items like pianos or antiques, and discuss your specific timeline and budget. This lets us provide an accurate, no-obligation quote and a tailored moving plan that addresses your logistical concerns before the journey begins.
Packing & Transporting Goods
Once you approve the plan, our team arrives on the scheduled date to begin professionally packing your belongings. We use inventory management systems to track every box and furniture item, ensuring nothing is left behind and everything is accounted for. After packing, we load your goods onto our vehicles and begin transit, with our drivers following optimised routes to ensure safety and punctuality.
Handling Logistics to Italy
Moving across borders involves complex logistics, including ferry or tunnel bookings and route planning across multiple countries. Our operations team monitors the progress of your shipment in real-time, coordinating with our network of European hubs to ensure a seamless flow. We handle all the “behind-the-scenes” logistics, allowing you to travel to Italy separately without worrying about the status of your household possessions.
Clearing Transit & Shipping Paperwork
We take the stress out of the administrative side of moving by managing all the essential transit and shipping documentation. This includes preparing detailed packing lists, pro forma invoices and the necessary declarations for Italian customs authorities. Our expertise ensures all paperwork is filed correctly and on time, significantly reducing the risk of border delays or unexpected fees.
Delivering & Unwrapping Goods
The final stage of our process is delivering your items to your new Italian address at a time that suits you. Our crew doesn’t just drop off boxes; we offer a full unwrapping service and place furniture in the rooms you choose. We also remove all used packing materials and debris, leaving your new home tidy and ready for you to enjoy from day one.
Who qualifies for duty-free entry to Italy?
Your household goods can enter Italy free of customs duty if you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve continuous months, you owned and used them for at least six months before you left, they are going to the same use in your new home, and they arrive within twelve months of you establishing residence in Italy.
Italy applies the European Union’s own relief rules, so you’d meet the same test anywhere in the bloc. The conditions are stricter than most people assume, and each one is worth reading on its own.
Twelve months outside the EU
This is the first gate, and it is about you, not your furniture. You must have lived outside the EU customs territory for a continuous period of at least twelve months.
Six months of ownership and use
Your belongings must have been in your possession and, where they are not consumable, actually used by you for at least six months before you stopped living in the UK. A dining table you have eaten at for years qualifies. A sofa bought in July to furnish the house in Puglia, still wrapped in October, does not.
That is the trap people fall into most often. The new furniture is a dutiable import travelling inside an otherwise duty-free consignment, and it has to be declared separately.
The same use at the new address
The goods have to be intended for the same purpose in Italy as they served in the UK. Furniture stays furniture. The relief is not a route for bringing in stock, equipment or anything destined for sale.
Arrival within twelve months
The relief applies to goods entered for free circulation within twelve months of the date you establish your residence in Italy. If your move runs in stages, that deadline is the one to plan around.
You apply for relief at the customs office where your goods arrive, so your inventory and paperwork matter as much as the vehicle. Your coordinator prepares the declaration and the itemised list that goes with it.
The rules above come from Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009, the EU law that grants the relief, and the European Commission’s own summary of the duty relief system.
What does duty-free relief not cover?
Duty-free relief never covers alcoholic products, tobacco and tobacco products, commercial means of transport, or articles for use in a trade or profession, apart from portable instruments of the applied or liberal arts. Those categories are excluded regardless of your circumstances, and you must declare and assess them separately from your household goods.
The last exclusion is the one that catches people out. Your tools of the trade are treated differently from your dining table, so a workshop full of equipment is not household effects. If you are moving a business to Italy along with a home, raise it at the survey rather than at the border.
The rule that applies for twelve months after your goods arrive
Relief is not simply a hurdle you clear on arrival. For twelve months after your belongings are released into free circulation, you may not lend them, use them as security, hire them out or transfer them, whether or not you are paid, without notifying customs first.
So selling a duty-free imported item within that first year is a real issue, not a technicality. It is rarely a problem in practice, because most people are furnishing a home rather than clearing one, but almost nobody is told about it until it matters.
Both the exclusions and the twelve-month condition are set out in Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009.
Can you ship a car to Italy from the UK?
Yes. Cars travel either inside your container or on their own, and the shipping is usually the straightforward part. The rules that matter are about registration rather than transport: once you live in Italy and drive your car there for more than six months, you must register it in Italy and pay Italian registration tax.
The key principle is that a car follows your residency, not your shipment. You cannot keep a vehicle on UK plates indefinitely once Italy is your normal home, and the only real exception is a stay of six months or less.
Moving home can reduce or remove the tax.
When you transfer your residence,e you may be entitled to a registration tax exemption or a refund. The conditions will look familiar: you need to have used the vehicle for at least six months before arriving, and you must bring the car in no later than twelve months after the transfer of residence. It follows the same logic as the household goods rule, which is no coincidence.
One honest warning
No EU-wide law governs vehicle registration. Each country sets the tax treatment; the procedure is Italian, and the Italian registration authority confirms the exact forms and deadlines, not Brussels or us. Treat the above as a general guide and check the details for your own vehicle before you commit to shipping it.
Your driving licence is the easy part.
The UK and Italy have a bilateral agreement on licence exchange, so you will not need to take a driving test. In most cases you can exchange within six years of becoming resident, and if you hold rights under the Withdrawal Agreement you can exchange at any time.
Six years is generous. Spain gives you six months from the date you get residency. If you are weighing up the two countries, that is a real practical difference.

Removals to Italy: frequently asked questions
How long do removals to Italy take?
Road freight to Italy typically takes 6 to 12 days, depending on the region and whether you are on a shared or dedicated load. Southern Italy and the islands take longer than the north. A part load adds consolidation time because the vehicle departs when it is full.
What documents do I need for Italy?
Passport copies, proof of your Italian address, a detailed, valued inventory in English and your codice fiscale. Personal effects you owned and used before the move normally qualify for duty relief, provided you claim it with the correct paperwork.
Will a lorry reach my Italian property?
Often not, and this is worth raising early. Historic town centres operate restricted traffic zones limiting vehicle size and delivery hours, and many rural properties have narrow approaches. Where access is limited, we transfer to a smaller shuttle vehicle for the final leg.
Can I bring my car to Italy?
Yes, with your household shipment or separately. The vehicle needs to be registered in Italy and meet local roadworthiness requirements, and duty relief depends on prior ownership and use. See vehicle shipping.
Do you handle Italian customs paperwork?
Yes. Household goods moving to Italy need post-Brexit customs formalities on both sides, which we prepare and submit as part of the move.
How is Brexit affecting shipping to Italy and personal items customs clearance?
There is now a requirement to declare the value of personal items when going through customs for exports and import duties when sending items to Italy from the UK.
What is the difference between groupage and dedicated services for transport to Italy?
Groupage is when people’s goods are combined into a single consignment shipped on one truck, while dedicated service means you have exclusive hire of a vehicle for your goods.
Are there any restrictions on what items can be sent as part of removals to Italy?
Several items cannot be shipped to Italy or require special permits, including certain food products, plants, weapons, hazardous materials, and large quantities of alcohol or tobacco.
How are big or antique pieces of furniture dealt with during the process of shipping to Italy?
Your antique or large furniture items will be professionally wrapped, cushioned and sometimes boxed by movers who specialise in shipping such goods to Italy.
