International Removals Costs
Free Quotes & Surveys
Itemised Written Quotes
No Obligation
Nobody publishes a single price for an international move, because there is no single move. What you can do is understand what actually drives the number, so that when quotes arrive you can tell a good one from a cheap one.
The five things that set the price
1. Volume. This is the big one. International removals are priced on the space your belongings occupy, in cubic feet or cubic metres, not on weight. A one-bedroom flat and a five-bedroom house are different orders of magnitude. Most people over-estimate their own volume, which is why a free survey usually saves money rather than costing it.
2. Shipping method. Road freight within Europe, sea freight long-haul, air freight when speed matters. Air is charged on chargeable weight, the greater of actual and volumetric, so bulky light items cost disproportionately. Sea is the cheapest per cubic metre and the slowest.
3. Sole use or shared. A part load shares a container or truck and you pay only for your space, but you wait for it to fill. A dedicated 20ft or 40ft container costs more and moves on your schedule. Below roughly a two-bedroom home, part load is usually the sensible choice.
4. Access at both ends. Stairs with no lift, narrow lanes, parking restrictions, a long carry from the vehicle to the door, or a destination address a large vehicle cannot reach. Each adds labour or requires a shuttle vehicle. This is the most common reason a quote given over the phone differs from the final invoice.
5. Customs, duty and destination charges. Terminal handling, port fees, customs clearance and any duty payable. Under Transfer of Residence relief, household goods often enter duty free, but relief has to be applied for and granted, not assumed.
What a proper quote itemises
- Packing labour and materials
- Collection and loading
- Freight, named by method and route
- Terminal and port charges at both ends
- Customs clearance and documentation
- Delivery, unloading and unpacking
- Insurance cover and the basis of valuation
- Storage, if any, and the rate after the free period
If a quote is a single number with no breakdown, ask for the breakdown. That is where the differences between quotes actually live.
Costs people forget
Insurance based on the wrong value. Transit cover is normally based on your declared replacement value. Under-declaring to save a small premium means under-recovery on a claim.
Storage overrun. Free storage periods end. Know the daily or weekly rate afterwards before you rely on it.
Demurrage. If a container sits at the destination port because paperwork is not ready, charges accrue daily. This is entirely avoidable with early documentation and is one of the largest unplanned costs in a bad move.
Shuttle vehicles. Where a full-size lorry cannot reach the property, goods transfer to a smaller vehicle. Usually foreseeable at survey.
How to reduce the cost honestly
Cut volume before you cut service. Every cubic metre you do not ship is money not spent, and the things people ship and then never unpack are remarkably consistent: old furniture that will not suit the new home, books, and appliances that will not run on the destination voltage. Declutter first, then get surveyed. Being flexible on dates helps on part loads, and packing yourself saves labour but shifts the insurance position, so check that before deciding.
