How do removals to Jersey from the UK work?
A move to Jersey goes by road to a south coast port and then by ferry, usually from Poole or Portsmouth. We survey your home, pack and wrap everything, book the sailing, and handle the declaration Jersey requires, because the island sits outside the UK tax area even though it is British.
That last point is the one that catches people out. Jersey is a Crown Dependency rather than part of the United Kingdom, and while there is no customs duty on goods from Britain, there is a declaration to make and a tax that can apply.
One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery, including the crossing.
How long does a removal to Jersey take?
Your schedule is confirmed on your quote and built around your completion date and the sailing. The crossing from Poole or Portsmouth is a matter of hours, so the plan is shaped by the drive to the port, the ferry timetable and the access at your Jersey address.
Sailings are limited and vehicle space on them is finite, so booking early matters more here than on a mainland move, particularly over the summer.
Tell your coordinator both addresses and your date and the sailing is chosen around them.
Do I pay tax on my belongings going into Jersey?
There is no customs duty on goods arriving from the UK, because Jersey is in a customs union with Britain. But Jersey sits outside the UK tax area and charges its own Goods and Services Tax, and you must declare your household goods and any vehicle to Jersey Customs and Immigration on arrival.
For someone genuinely moving home there is a change of residence relief, and its conditions are worth knowing. No relief is available on tobacco, alcoholic drinks or commercial means of transport. Goods granted the relief must not be lent, hired out, sold, given away or used as security without first notifying Jersey Customs, and if you dispose of them within twelve months, GST becomes chargeable on their value at that point.
You can send your belongings over before you move, but you then need to take up actual residence within six months of the goods arriving, and security for the tax may be required in the meantime.
These conditions come from the Jersey government’s own published guidance. Your coordinator confirms how they apply to your move before anything is loaded.
What do I need to arrange before moving to Jersey?
Your housing position first, because it governs everything else. Jersey controls who may buy or rent which properties through a residential status system, so where you can live is determined before you move rather than after, and it is worth being certain of it before booking a removal.
That is genuinely different from moving anywhere in Britain, where you can simply buy what you can afford. On Jersey your status decides your options, and a move booked before the housing position is settled is a move that may need rearranging.
Beyond that, the declaration to Jersey Customs is the main formality on the day, and your coordinator prepares the inventory that supports it.
Which ferry route do you use to Jersey?
Normally Poole or Portsmouth to St Helier, which are the main freight and passenger routes from the south coast. The drive to the port is the longer part of the journey for most customers, and the sailing itself is a matter of hours.
Capacity is the constraint rather than frequency. Vehicle space is finite and the summer season is busy, so an early booking is worth considerably more on this route than on a mainland move.
Weather can occasionally delay a sailing, and your coordinator will say what the contingency is before you commit to a date.
Can I send a part load to Jersey?
Yes, and the ferry cost makes it well worth considering. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings occupy on a shared vehicle rather than paying for a whole van and its crossing when you are only part filling it.
The trade-off is the schedule, because a shared load works to a route and a sailing window rather than to your date alone.
Given that Jersey properties are often smaller than mainland ones, a part load suits a great many moves there. There is more on our part load removals page.
Which parts of Jersey do you deliver to?
We deliver across the whole island, including St Helier, St Brelade, St Saviour, St Clement, Gorey, St Aubin, St Ouen and St Martin. Jersey is about nine miles by five, so distance is never the issue and the lanes are everything.
Jersey’s rural roads are famously narrow, with high banks, blind bends and green lanes where larger vehicles are impractical or restricted. St Helier adds parking limits and apartment access to the mix.
Where a full-size vehicle cannot reach the property, the final leg transfers to something smaller, which is planned into the quote rather than discovered at the end of a lane.
What sets the price of a removal to Jersey?
How much you are moving, whether you book a dedicated van or a part load, the ferry crossing, how much packing you want us to do, and the access at the Jersey end. The sailing is a real cost, which is why a part load often works out well.
The possible GST is the other variable, and your quote states what has been allowed for rather than leaving it to arrive as a surprise.
We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.
We also handle removals to Scotland, Northern Ireland and France, alongside house moves across England. Sending less than a full household? Part load removals explains shared loads.

Removals to Jersey: frequently asked questions
Jersey is British, so why is there a declaration?
Because Jersey is a Crown Dependency rather than part of the United Kingdom, and it sits outside the UK tax area. There is no customs duty on goods from Britain, but you must declare household goods and vehicles to Jersey Customs and Immigration.
Will I pay GST on my furniture?
Not if the change of residence relief applies to your move, which is the normal position for someone genuinely relocating. Your coordinator confirms it before anything is loaded and your quote says what has been allowed for.
Can I send my things over before I move?
Yes, but you then need to take up actual residence within six months of the goods arriving, and security for the tax may be required in the meantime. Tell your coordinator your timings so it is set up correctly.
What if I sell something soon after arriving?
If goods granted the relief are disposed of within twelve months, GST becomes chargeable on their value at that point. They also must not be lent, hired out or used as security without notifying Jersey Customs first.
Does my housing status matter?
Yes, and more than most people expect. Jersey controls who may buy or rent which properties through a residential status system, so it is worth being certain of your position before booking a removal rather than afterwards.
Can a removal lorry use Jersey's lanes?
Often not. The rural lanes are narrow with high banks and blind bends, and green lanes restrict larger vehicles, so the final leg frequently transfers to something smaller. Tell us the address at the survey and it is planned in.
Is my move insured?
Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
