How do removals to Hong Kong from the UK work?
Removals to Hong Kong from the UK travel by sea freight in a full or part container, or by air freight when you need your belongings quickly. Removals.co.uk packs and inventories everything at your UK address, books the freight, handles clearance at both ends and delivers into your Hong Kong home.
Planning to move Hong Kong? No matter it is for work, family, or just a change of scenery, relocating internationally can be daunting. That’s where we can help. We at Removals.co.uk are experts in making your move to Hong Kong, as seamless and smooth as possible.
With years of experience in international removals, we will take care of every aspect of your move from packing up your belongings in the UK to unpacking them in your new home in Hong Kong.
How long do removals to Hong Kong take?
Sea freight to Hong Kong takes 6 to 8 weeks door to door in a full container, and 8 to 12 weeks in a part load, because a shared container waits to be filled and clears alongside other shipments. Air freight runs 7 to 14 days. Customs clearance and delivery from the port are included in those figures.
Choose a full container if you have a fixed date to work to, and a part load if the saving matters more than the timing. The range moves with sailing schedules and the time of year, so your written quote carries the dates for your actual booking rather than an average.
Should I use a part container or a full container to Hong Kong?
Choose a part container, also called a part load, when you are sending less than a full household: you share the container and pay only for the space your belongings occupy. Choose a full container for a whole home, where the container is sealed at your door and clears as one consignment in your name.

We have been improving our services for many years now and understand that no two global moves are the same. Additionally, neither are countless individual budgets and requirements, so we tailor our solutions to fit your requirements – one more reason why we are one of the top international removals companies.

How much do removals to Hong Kong cost?
The cost of a removal to Hong Kong depends on four things: the volume you are sending, whether you take a part container or a full one, whether you travel by sea or by air, and how easily a vehicle can reach the door at both ends. Every quote is written after a survey, so the figure is yours rather than an average.
At Removals.co.uk, we always strive to offer affordable shipping solutions to Hong Kong. We have multiple options that cater to the different needs of families and businesses:
Part-Load Service: It is ideal for smaller shipments which enable you to share container space with others and you only have to pay for the space you occupy.
Sole-Use Container: This option is suitable for larger or bulky items and you can opt for 20ft or 40ft container. Here, you will need to pay for entire container.
The final cost of shipping will depend on the timeline and destination in Hong Kong and your move coordinator will provide you with a comprehensive quote before you agree to anything.
Should I send my belongings to Hong Kong by sea freight or air freight?
Sea freight is the economical choice for a household move and carries furniture, appliances and boxes in a full or part container. Air freight is the fastest method and suits urgent or smaller consignments, where speed matters more than cost. Both include customs clearance at each end.
Air Freight
If you need your belongings in Hong Kong quickly, an airfreight service is best as it is the fastest international shipping method for moving your goods overseas. Air freight shipping is quite convenient, but has the highest price tag. Your quote for Hong Kong Shipping will be based on the weight of your consignment, making it less cost efficient for larger shipments like from a whole house removal.
If you are just sending a one-bedroom apartment, some boxes of clothes, or a few items of furniture to Hong Kong but need them urgently, air freight will be an ideal method of delivery. Many clients will use our air freight to Hong Kong service together with an alternative method of transport. For example, they may send a small number of items that they need urgently via air freight and everything else they can send preferably in a shipping container (20ft or 40ft) to save costs.
Another consideration, when determining the cost of your international Shipping to Hong Kong via air freight, is what you will do with your household goods when they arrive in Hong Kong. You can either choose to collect your goods from the airport yourself or ask our dedicated international moving teams to deliver your goods to your new home in Hong Kong.
Sea Freight
Sea freight is the most affordable option for large shipments, although it does take longer than air freight.
We have two sea freight services to choose from:
Shared Container: This option is perfect if you are only moving a small amount of your belongings and involves you sharing space in a shared 20ft or 40ft container. You are only charged for the amount of space your items take up.
Full Container Load: If you are moving entire household or larger items you will need a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container. This service gives you exclusive access to the use of the container for your belongings.
Australia, Canada, USA, South Africa, Hong Kong, Dubai, Asia, South America, Tenerife, Greece, and Cyprus are a few popular destinations. Also, we offer full shipping, box-only shipping and furniture shipping to over 200 destinations. We pack your goods sufficiently, ship in a timely manner and deliver safely to your new home in Hong Kong.
Do I pay import duty on household goods in Hong Kong?
No. Hong Kong is a free port and levies no customs tariff on imports, so your furniture, clothing and personal effects arrive duty free. Only four things carry excise duty: liquor above 30 percent alcohol, tobacco, hydrocarbon oil and methyl alcohol. Personal effects clear as ordinary cargo, and duty on anything dutiable packed inside them still applies.
That last point is the one that catches people out. Hong Kong gives no duty-free concession on dutiable goods packed inside a household shipment, so a case of wine travelling with your furniture is treated exactly as it would be if you imported it on its own. If you are moving a wine collection, tell your coordinator before the container is loaded, so the duty is declared and settled properly rather than discovered at the port. Everything else in a normal household move, from furniture and white goods to books, clothing, kitchenware and toys, crosses the border without a tariff.

Removals to Hong Kong: frequently asked questions
Do I pay import duty on my belongings in Hong Kong?
No. Hong Kong is a free port with no customs tariff on imports, so household goods arrive duty free. The only excise duties are on liquor above 30 percent alcohol, tobacco, hydrocarbon oil and methyl alcohol, and those still apply if they are packed inside your shipment.
Should I choose a part container or a full container?
Choose a part container, or part load, for anything less than a full household: you share the container and pay for the space you use. Choose a full container for a whole home, sealed at your door and cleared as one consignment in your name.
Can I send just a few boxes to Hong Kong?
Yes. We run a box and carton collection service Monday to Friday, and a part container lets a small consignment share space rather than paying for a container of its own. Air freight suits a small urgent shipment.
Which parts of Hong Kong do you deliver to?
Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, including Victoria City, Kennedy Town, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin, Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Tai Po, Discovery Bay and North Lantau. Delivery is door to door, so the leg from the port is in your quote.
Is air freight worth it to Hong Kong?
Air freight is the fastest way to get your belongings to Hong Kong and is worth it for urgent items or a small consignment. For a full household move sea freight is far more economical, and many people send a small air shipment alongside a sea container.
Who handles the customs paperwork?
We do, at both ends. We prepare the export documentation in the UK and arrange clearance in Hong Kong, where personal effects are cleared as ordinary cargo.
Can you take excess baggage and luggage?
Yes. If you are facing airline excess baggage charges we can send the extra cases and boxes as freight instead, packed and documented by us and delivered to your Hong Kong address.
