How do removals to Ireland from the UK work?

Removals to Ireland run door-to-door by road and ferry, with daily departures. You don’t need a visa or residence permit to move there under the Common Travel Area, but your belongings do cross a customs frontier because the Republic is in the EU and the UK is not. We handle the declaration and the Irish transfer-of-residence relief.

Our removals service to Ireland makes your move as smooth and stress-free as possible. With years of experience moving from the UK to Ireland, we provide secure transportation, expert packing, and support every step of the way. Whether you’re moving a few items or your entire home, we ensure your belongings arrive safely and on time, giving you complete peace of mind.

International Removals

What is included in a removal to Ireland?

Packing in export-grade materials, a labelled inventory of everything in the shipment, collection from your UK address, road and ferry crossing as a full lorry or shared part load, Irish customs declaration, transfer-of-residence claim, and delivery to your new home. Unpacking and UK storage are available if you want them.

We offer a full range of services for any move to Ireland.

Should I send my belongings to Ireland by road, sea or air?

Road, on a ferry, for almost every Irish move. A lorry is quicker and cheaper than a sea container for such a short crossing, and it delivers door-to-door. Air freight is worth it only for a few urgent items, because it is priced by weight. A sea container earns its place on a very large move with a flexible date.

Choosing the right freight method is an important part of planning a move from the UK to Ireland. We offer flexible freight solutions to support different relocation needs while ensuring safe and reliable transport.

Air Freight

If you need to get your stuff from the UK to Ireland fast, air freight is the best option. It’s ideal for urgent shipments or smaller amounts of items you need right away. Sure, it’s more expensive, but it gets your items there quicker and with less handling. This makes it a great choice for moves where timing is everything or for those must-have items.

Sea Freight

Sea freight is a budget-friendly choice for bigger shipments. People often use it for full household moves where timing isn’t as tight. Your belongings are packed into secure containers and shipped along established sea routes from the UK to Ireland. Although it takes longer than air freight, sea freight offers great value.

Road Freight

Road freight is super popular for moving things from the UK to Ireland. Goods are transported by truck and usually cross by ferry. This option balances price, efficiency, and flexibility. Road freight offers door-to-door delivery, making it suitable for both full and partial loads. It’s a straightforward choice for most residential moves.

How long do removals to Ireland take?

Removals to Ireland typically take 2 to 4 days from collection to delivery, with a dedicated vehicle at the shorter end and a shared part load at the longer end, because a shared load waits for other consignments. The Holyhead crossing itself is a little over three hours, and we run daily departures.

That window covers collection and packing in the UK, the drive to the ferry port, the crossing, Irish customs clearance and delivery to your new address. The part most likely to shift the date is the paperwork, not the sailing, which is why Revenue wants the declaration two weeks before your goods arrive.

What documents do I need for removals to Ireland?

A passport or photo ID for everyone moving, proof of your Irish address (such as a rental or purchase agreement), proof that you are genuinely relocating rather than shipping goods for resale, and a signed inventory. The customs claim itself is Irish Revenue form C and E 1076, which we prepare and email to your port of entry two weeks before the goods arrive.

Having all paperwork ready in advance helps avoid delays and ensures compliance with cross-border requirements. Below are the key documents commonly required when moving from the UK to Ireland.

Proof of Identity

You’ll need to provide valid proof of identity for your move. Usually, this can be a passport or a valid UK driver’s licence. Make sure the document is up to date and clearly shows your personal details.

Inventory List

Having a detailed inventory list is crucial for any international move. This document should outline all the household items you’re transporting, with each item clearly described for better handling and tracking. Signing off on the inventory can help confirm what’s in your shipment.

Proof of Residence in Ireland

You might need to show evidence of your new address in Ireland during the relocation process. This could be a rental agreement, a purchase contract, or some official confirmation of your residency. This helps verify where your belongings are headed.

Proof of Relocation

You’ll also need proof of relocation to show you’re actually moving, not just shipping goods for business reasons. This could include things like employment contracts, relocation letters, or confirmation of a permanent move.

Transfer of Residence (TOR) Application (Optional)

In some cases, you might want to submit a Transfer of Residence (TOR) application. This document can help you qualify for relief on personal belongings during your move. While it’s not required in every situation, we can guide you on whether a TOR application makes sense for your relocation.

Do I pay duty or VAT on my belongings going into Ireland?

Usually not, but it is a claim rather than an automatic exemption, and getting it wrong leaves you exposed to Irish VAT. Irish Revenue grants transfer of residence relief where you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 continuous months and have owned and used the goods for at least six months before the date you move.

The goods must arrive within six months before, or twelve months after, the date you move, and duty and tax must already have been paid on them in the country where you bought them. If you lend, hire out, sell or otherwise dispose of them within twelve months of arrival, the import charges become payable. The relief covers household effects, bicycles, motorcycles, private cars, trailers and caravans. Still, it does not cover alcohol or tobacco beyond the normal traveller allowances, and it does not cover tools used in a trade. The claim itself is Revenue Form C and E 1076, emailed with your supporting documents two weeks before the goods arrive. These conditions come from Irish Revenue and are worth confirming with your coordinator when you book.

What are the steps of a removal to Ireland?

Five stages. A free quote, with a survey for larger moves to measure volume and access. Packing and collection on your agreed date. The Irish customs paperwork, including the Pre-Boarding Notification if your load travels by freight ferry. The road and ferry crossing itself. Then delivery to your new home, with unpacking if you want.

How your belongings travel to Ireland

Ireland at a glance
Travel time from the UKAbout 1 hour 20 minutes to Dublin by air, or roughly 3 hours 15 minutes on the Holyhead ferry
CurrencyEuro in the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland uses the pound sterling
Main airportsDublin, Cork, Shannon, Knock, and Belfast for the North
Main ferry and shipping portsDublin, Rosslare and Cork, sailing from Holyhead, Fishguard and Pembroke
How most moves travelRoad freight on a ferry. A lorry is quicker and cheaper than a sea container for almost every Irish move.
Good news if you are shipping a carIreland drives on the left, like the UK, so a right-hand-drive car is the right choice.
The one that catches people out: movingto the Republic is a customs move, and moving to Northern Ireland is not. Belfast is part of the UK, so that one is domestic with no customs paperwork at all. People routinely assume both are the same, and they are not

Choosing between a lorry, a part load and air freight

Removals to Ireland: frequently asked questions

Is a move to Northern Ireland the same as a move to the Republic?

No, and it is the thing that catches people out most often. Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland are part of the UK, so moving there is domestic and requires no customs paperwork. The Republic is in the EU, so moving to Dublin, Cork, or Galway is a customs move that requires a declaration and a transfer-of-residence claim.

No. Under the Common Travel Area, British and Irish citizens can move freely between the UK and Ireland, live in either country, work, study and use public services without needing a visa, residence permit or employment permit. Your belongings are the part of the move that still needs paperwork, not you.

If your household goods travel from the UK to the Republic by ferry through the freight channel, Irish Revenue requires a valid Pre-Boarding Notification identifier before the vehicle checks in with the ferry company. We request it alongside your customs paperwork, which Revenue asks for two weeks before the goods arrive. Without it, the load cannot board.

Yes. The Irish transfer of residence relief covers private cars, motorcycles, trailers and caravans, along with your household effects, and Vehicle Registration Tax relief is handled separately on its own form. Ireland drives on the left, as the UK does, so a right-hand-drive car is the correct way round. Our vehicle shipping page has details.

Yes. A part load shares a vehicle with other consignments going the same way, so you pay for the space your belongings take up rather than a whole lorry. For anything from a few boxes to roughly a one-bedroom fla,t it is usually the cheapestoptione, butd the trade-off is that a shared load waits for other work.

Yes. We pack in export-grade materials, label everything in the shipment, and can unpack it at the other end if you want. A proper inventory matters more on an Irish move than on most, because Revenue wants items of value listed with an estimated current market value on the customs declaration.

Volume first, then whether you book a dedicated vehicle or share one, how much packing you want, and access at both ends. Narrow streets, upper floors without a lift and restricted delivery hours all add time. Every quote is itemised, so you can see what each part of the move costs.
