How do removals to Montenegro from the UK work?

Removals to Montenegro from the UK go by road, in a dedicated van for your household alone or a part load sharing a lorry. We survey, pack and wrap everything, then drive down through Europe. Montenegro is outside the EU, so there is a full customs entry at the border on arrival.

Montenegro is the one Balkan destination we run where sea is theoretically an option, because the country has a working port at Bar. For a household move from the UK the road route is almost always quicker and simpler, but it is worth knowing the alternative exists for unusually large shipments.

One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery.

How long do removals to Montenegro take?

Road freight to Montenegro typically takes 6 to 12 days from collection to delivery. A dedicated vehicle sits at the shorter end because it drives straight there, while a shared load sits at the longer end, because it waits for other consignments before it departs.

The customs entry at the border is the step most likely to move that date rather than the driving itself.

Coastal deliveries in high summer are worth planning around too, because the road along the Bay of Kotor becomes very slow in season.

Do I pay duty on my belongings going into Montenegro?

Montenegro is outside the EU, so your shipment is a full customs entry rather than an internal movement, and relief for used household goods on a genuine change of residence is handled under Montenegrin rules rather than EU ones. We have your agent confirm the exact position for your shipment before it departs.

We are deliberately not quoting conditions or rates on this page. Unlike Kosovo or Bosnia, we could not find current published Montenegrin guidance we were willing to stand behind, and inventing plausible-sounding customs rules on a page that generates quotes is not something we will do.

What applies across the region, and what your agent will be working from, is the familiar shape: evidence that you genuinely lived abroad, evidence that you are establishing residence in Montenegro, goods that are used rather than newly bought, and an accurate valued inventory. Prepare those and you are in good order whatever the detail turns out to be.

Your quote states what has been allowed for, so there is no surprise at the border.

What documents do I need for removals to Montenegro?

You will need your passport, evidence of your residence status in Montenegro, proof of where you were living before the move, and a detailed inventory with a value against every item. The transport document for the load completes the basic set.

The inventory does the heavy lifting on any non-EU entry, and Montenegro is no exception. Itemised and realistically valued is what gets a load through; a summarised list is what holds one at the border.

Your coordinator confirms the exact document list with our agent for your circumstances, because someone buying a holiday property and someone relocating for work are not asked for the same things.

Which route do you take to Montenegro?

Your load crosses the Channel and runs through Europe by road into the Balkans. Montenegro does have a seaport at Bar, which makes it unusual among its neighbours, but for a UK household move the road route is normally faster and avoids port handling altogether.

The country is small and the main centres are close together, so the inland leg is short once you are across the border. What is not short is the coast road in summer, which is worth mentioning when you pick a delivery date.

Tell your coordinator the delivery address and the access and the vehicle plan is built around it.

Can I send a part load to Montenegro?

Yes, and it suits many Montenegro moves, because a good number are second homes and apartments rather than full households. You pay for the space your belongings occupy on a shared lorry rather than hiring a whole vehicle.

The care is identical either way. The difference is the schedule, because a shared load waits for other consignments before it departs, so a dedicated van is the option with a fixed date.

The survey settles which fits and we quote both. There is more on our part load removals page.

Which parts of Montenegro do you deliver to?

We deliver across Montenegro, including Podgorica, Niksic, Budva, Kotor, Herceg Novi, Tivat, Bar, Ulcinj and Cetinje, as well as the villages reached by road from those towns. The country is small, so the drive from the border is short.

The coastal old towns are the access question. Kotor, Budva and Herceg Novi have historic centres with pedestrianised streets and vehicle restrictions that a full-size lorry simply cannot enter.

Where that is the case the final leg transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle, and on the coast that is the normal arrangement rather than the exception. It is planned into the quote.

What sets the price of removals to Montenegro?

How much you are sending, whether you book a dedicated van or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, and the access at the Montenegrin end. A shuttle transfer into a coastal old town adds crew and time, and so does a summer delivery date on the coast road.

Road freight is priced on the space your belongings occupy rather than their weight, so the survey is what makes a quote real.

We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.

Across the region we also run removals to Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Kosovo, and every European route is on our European removals page. Sending less than a full household? See part load removals.

Removals to Montenegro: frequently asked questions

Why does this page not list the Montenegrin customs conditions?

Because we could not find current official guidance we were willing to stand behind, and we will not invent customs rules on a page people get quotes from. Your agent confirms the position for your shipment before it departs and your quote says what has been allowed for.

Yes, although it is neither in the EU nor in the eurozone. It adopted the euro unilaterally, which is useful to know for budgeting at the other end but makes no difference to the customs position, which is still a non-EU entry.

Montenegro does have a working port at Bar, so it is technically possible. For a UK household move the road route is normally faster and avoids port handling, so we would only look at sea for an unusually large shipment.

No, and that is expected rather than a problem. The historic centres are pedestrianised with vehicle restrictions, so the final leg transfers to a smaller shuttle vehicle. Tell us the address at the survey and it is planned in.

It is slower. The coast road through the Bay of Kotor gets very congested in season, which can affect the delivery window rather than the transit time. Worth mentioning when you pick a date.

Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is common on Montenegro moves because property completions slip. Holding goods in the UK is simpler than arranging storage at the far end.

Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
