How do removals to South Korea from the UK work?
Removals to South Korea from the UK go by sea, in a full container or a part load sharing space with other households. We survey, pack and wrap everything, handle the export side here, and a Korean agent clears the shipment, which happens at a bonded warehouse rather than at the quay.
South Korea is one of the more predictable Far East routes, with good ports and an orderly clearance process. The conditions that decide your duty position are about how long you intend to stay and how long you have owned your things, which is unusual and worth understanding before you pack.
One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery.
How long do removals to South Korea take?
Your transit time is confirmed in writing on your quote, because it depends on the sailing schedule and whether you book a full container or a part load. A shared container waits until it is full before it sails, so it always takes longer than one of your own.
We would rather give you the real date for your sailing than a range off a page. Clearance at the Korean end is generally orderly, so the container filling is usually what decides a part load date rather than customs.
Do I pay duty on my belongings going into South Korea?
Used household goods are normally duty free for a foreign national intending to live in Korea, but the threshold is set by your intended length of stay. Published guidance indicates roughly six months or more if you are moving with family, and around a year if you are moving alone.
Fall below that and the shipment is treated as a lesser category with higher duties, which is why the question gets asked at the survey rather than at the port.
There is a second condition about the goods themselves. They generally need to have been owned and used abroad for a minimum period before entry, commonly stated as three months, and electrical items owned for less than six months are frequently dutiable. New goods, vehicles and second quantities of the same item, such as a second television or a second set of golf clubs, are also commonly charged.
These conditions come from published mover and customs guidance rather than from a figure we have invented, and the sources disagree on some thresholds. Your coordinator confirms the current position with our Korean agent before your goods sail.
What documents do I need for removals to South Korea?
You will need your passport with the entry stamp, your Alien Registration Card, a detailed inventory or packing list, the transport document, and a power of attorney for the customs agent. Your family members’ cards are needed too if their belongings are in the shipment.
The Alien Registration Card does the heavy lifting here, because it is what proves your stay to customs, and guidance commonly expects it to carry a reasonable period of validity.
Clearance cannot happen before you arrive in Korea, so a container landing ahead of you simply waits in the bonded warehouse. We plan the sailing around your travel date for that reason.
Which Korean port will my shipment arrive at?
Most household shipments from the UK arrive at Busan, which is Korea’s main container port, with Incheon serving the Seoul area. The inland leg is short by Asian standards, because the country is compact and the motorway network is excellent.
That makes South Korea unusual among our long-haul routes: the drive from the port is rarely what shapes the cost or the date. The container filling and the clearance are.
Tell your coordinator the delivery address and the access, particularly the floor and lift arrangements in an apartment block, and it goes into the quote.
Can I send a part load to South Korea?
Yes. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings actually take inside a shared container rather than hiring a whole one, which suits the many people who arrive into furnished accommodation and ship a modest load rather than a full household.
The care is identical. The difference is the schedule, because a shared container sails when it is full, so the date moves with the other households in it.
The survey settles which fits and we quote both. There is more on our part load removals page.
Which parts of South Korea do you deliver to?
We deliver across the country, including Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Ulsan, Suwon and Jeju, as well as towns reached by road from those cities. Jeju adds a sea crossing to the final leg.
Almost every Korean delivery is an apartment delivery, and Korean apartment blocks are tall. Lift dimensions, service lift booking and permitted delivery hours matter far more here than the distance from the port.
Where a lift cannot take your furniture, an external lift or a smaller vehicle may be needed, and that is planned into the quote rather than discovered on the day.
What sets the price of removals to South Korea?
How much you are sending, whether you book a full container or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, and the access at both ends. With a short inland leg at the Korean end, volume and building access carry more of the price than distance does.
Sea freight is priced on the space your belongings occupy rather than their weight, which is why the survey matters and why deciding what to leave behind is the most reliable saving.
We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.
Moving elsewhere in the Far East? We also run removals to Japan, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, and every route is on our Asia and Middle East destinations page. Sending less than a full household? See part load removals.

Removals to South Korea: frequently asked questions
How long do I need to be staying to get duty-free treatment?
Published guidance indicates around six months or more if you are moving with family and about a year if you are moving alone. A shorter stay puts the shipment in a lesser category with higher duties, so it is worth confirming your plans at the survey.
Why would my TV be charged duty?
Two common reasons: electrical items owned for less than six months are frequently dutiable, and a second quantity of the same item, such as a second television, is often charged even when the first is not. Tell your surveyor about recent purchases.
What is a bonded warehouse clearance?
It means your goods are cleared at a secure customs facility rather than at the quayside. It is normal in Korea and generally orderly, but it does mean clearance cannot begin until you are in the country.
Do I need my family's ARCs too?
Yes, if their belongings are in the shipment. Korean customs uses the cards as proof of stay, so a family move needs the whole family’s documentation rather than just the lead applicant’s.
Can you deliver to a high-rise apartment?
Yes, and it is most of what we do in Seoul. Tell us the building at the survey so lift dimensions, service lift booking and delivery windows are arranged in advance, because that is what decides whether a delivery takes hours or a day.
Can you store my things before they sail?
Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire. That is useful while the Alien Registration Card is being issued, since the clearance depends on it.
Is my shipment insured?
Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
