How do removals to Paraguay from the UK work?
Removals to Paraguay from the UK go by sea to a regional port and then overland, because Paraguay is landlocked. We survey, pack and wrap everything, arrange the consular stamps the paperwork needs, and work with an agent in Asuncion who clears the shipment on arrival.
Paraguay is one of only two landlocked countries we serve in the Americas, which shapes the whole route. It also has a documentation requirement that is unusual and inflexible, covered in the documents section below.
One coordinator runs the move throughout, and the inventory built at the survey becomes the stamped document.
How long do removals to Paraguay take?
Your transit time is confirmed in writing on your quote, because it depends on the sailing schedule, whether you book a full container or a part load, and the overland leg from the port of entry. Being landlocked adds a stage that a coastal destination does not have.
We would rather give you the real date for your booking than a range that proves wrong for your routing. The overland leg and the clearance are the parts most likely to move it rather than the sailing itself.
Do I pay duty on my belongings going into Paraguay?
Relief is tied to residency and to a window. Published guidance indicates a foreign national can bring used household goods in free of duty within the first six months of obtaining residence, and that the goods should have been owned and used abroad beforehand, commonly for at least twelve months.
You are also expected to keep using the goods after you arrive rather than selling them on, which is the usual condition attached to this kind of relief.
Returning Paraguayan nationals who have been abroad for at least two years follow a different route, with paperwork obtained from the government’s repatriation office that needs to be in place before the shipment arrives rather than afterwards.
These conditions come from published mover and customs guidance rather than from a figure we have invented, and the most detailed source is a few years old. Your coordinator has our Asuncion agent confirm the current position before anything is loaded.
What documents do I need for removals to Paraguay?
You will need your identity documentation, your residence papers, and a packing list showing a value against each item. Both the packing list and the transport document need a consular stamp from the Paraguayan consulate in the UK before your goods leave.
The detail that catches people out is that a Hague Apostille is not accepted in place of the consular stamp. They are not interchangeable, and a shipment that arrives with an apostille instead of the stamp has a problem that cannot be solved from Paraguay.
Because the stamp is obtained here, it is arranged alongside the survey rather than treated as paperwork for later.
How does my shipment reach a landlocked country?
Your container travels by sea to a port in the region and then overland into Paraguay, with the customs entry handled on arrival. Asuncion also sits on the Paraguay river, which carries barge traffic, so river freight is part of how goods move in and out of the country.
Practically, that extra stage is why a Paraguayan move takes longer than a coastal South American one of similar distance, and why the routing is chosen carefully rather than by default.
Tell your coordinator the delivery address and the access at the other end and the plan is built around it.
Can I send a part load to Paraguay?
Yes. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings actually take inside a shared container rather than hiring a whole one, which suits anything smaller than a full house and is the usual choice on a route with an overland leg.
The care is identical. The difference is the schedule, because a shared container sails once it is full, so the date moves with the other households travelling in it.
The survey settles which fits and we quote both. There is more on our part load removals page.
Which parts of Paraguay do you deliver to?
We deliver across Paraguay, including Asuncion, Ciudad del Este, Encarnacion, San Lorenzo, Luque, Capiata, Lambare and Pedro Juan Caballero, as well as towns reached by road from those centres. Most arrivals settle in or around Asuncion.
Outside the capital the road network thins, and properties in the Chaco or the rural interior can involve a long final approach on unmade roads. The wet season makes that slower still.
Where a full-size lorry cannot reach the property, the final leg transfers to a smaller vehicle, which is planned into the quote rather than appearing as an extra.
What sets the price of removals to Paraguay?
How much you are sending, whether you book a full container or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, and the overland leg from the port of entry. The consular stamping adds a step at this end that a simpler destination does not have.
Sea freight is priced on the space your belongings occupy rather than their weight, which is why the survey beats a phone estimate, and the overland stage makes volume matter more here than on a coastal route.
We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.
Moving elsewhere in the region? We also run removals to Uruguay, Argentina and Bolivia, and every route is listed on our Americas destinations page. Sending less than a full household? Part load removals explains shared containers.

Removals to Paraguay: frequently asked questions
Will a Hague Apostille do instead of the consular stamp?
No. Published guidance is explicit that the apostille is not accepted in place of the Paraguayan consular stamp. They are different things, and a shipment that arrives with the wrong one has a problem that cannot be fixed from Paraguay.
How long after getting residence can I ship?
Guidance indicates the duty-free window runs for about six months from obtaining residence, so it is worth starting the move as soon as your status is confirmed rather than settling in first and shipping later.
Does it matter that Paraguay is landlocked?
Yes, practically. Your container travels by sea to a regional port and then overland, which adds a stage, some time and some cost compared with a coastal destination at a similar distance.
I am a returning Paraguayan national. Is it different?
Yes. A separate route applies after about two years abroad, with paperwork from the repatriation office that has to be in place before the shipment arrives. Start it early, because obtaining it late is the common failure.
Do I have to keep the goods after arrival?
That is the usual condition attached to this kind of relief: the goods are brought in for your own continued use rather than for sale. Selling them on shortly after arrival is what would put the relief in question.
Can you store my things before they sail?
Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is often sensible while residency is being finalised given the six month window starts from approval rather than from your arrival.
Is my shipment insured?
Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
