How do removals to Northern Ireland from Great Britain work?
A move to Northern Ireland is a domestic removal within the United Kingdom, with a ferry in the middle of it. We survey your home, pack and wrap everything, load a dedicated van or a part load, and sail from Cairnryan, Liverpool or Birkenhead before delivering to your door.
The ferry is the only real difference from a mainland move, and it is a scheduling question rather than a paperwork one. Sailings have to be booked and they fill up in summer and around holidays.
One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery, including the crossing.
How long does a removal to Northern Ireland take?
Your schedule is confirmed on your quote and built around your completion date and the sailing. The crossing itself is a matter of hours, so what shapes the plan is the drive to the port, the sailing time available, and the access at your new address.
Cairnryan to Belfast is the shortest crossing and the usual choice from the north of England and Scotland. Liverpool and Birkenhead suit the Midlands and the south, with longer sailings that often run overnight.
Tell your coordinator both addresses and your date and the route and sailing are chosen around them.
Is there customs paperwork moving to Northern Ireland?
Not for your household belongings. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and you are moving your own home within it, so there is no customs declaration to make, no inventory for an agent and no duty to pay on your furniture.
People ask because they have read about trading arrangements between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Those rules concern commercial goods being sold and moved by businesses, not a household moving home, and your removal is not an import in that sense.
If anything about your particular move did raise a question, your coordinator would tell you before you booked rather than at the port. We would always rather say plainly that something needs checking than let you assume.
What else changes when you move to Northern Ireland?
A few administrative things rather than anything affecting your removal. Northern Ireland charges domestic rates instead of council tax, conveyancing follows its own system rather than the English one, and health and driver registration run through Northern Ireland bodies.
None of that touches the van, but it all lands in the same few weeks, so it is worth having a list. Our moving house checklist covers the UK-wide jobs in order.
If you are moving on to the Republic afterwards, or buying there instead, that genuinely is a customs move and our removals to Ireland page explains why.
Which ferry route do you use?
Cairnryan to Larne or Belfast for moves from Scotland and the north of England, or Liverpool and Birkenhead to Belfast for the Midlands and the south. The choice is made on where you are starting from, the volume, and the sailing times that fit your completion date.
Sailings are booked in advance and the summer and holiday periods are genuinely busy, so an early booking is worth more on this route than on a mainland one.
Bad weather can delay a crossing. It is uncommon but it happens, and your coordinator will tell you what the contingency is rather than pretending otherwise.
Can I send a part load to Northern Ireland?
Yes, and the ferry cost makes it particularly worth considering. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings occupy on a shared vehicle rather than paying for a whole van and its crossing when you are only half filling it.
The trade-off is the schedule, because a shared load works to a route and a sailing window rather than to your date alone.
The survey settles which fits and we quote both so you can see the difference. There is more on our part load removals page.
Which parts of Northern Ireland do you deliver to?
We move households across all six counties, including Belfast, Londonderry, Lisburn, Newry, Bangor, Ballymena, Coleraine, Enniskillen and Armagh, as well as rural addresses reached by road from those towns and the Antrim and Down coasts.
Belfast terraces and apartment blocks bring the familiar access questions about parking, stairs and lift bookings. Rural addresses in Fermanagh or the Glens can involve narrow lanes where a full-size lorry is impractical.
Where that is the case the final leg transfers to a smaller vehicle, which is planned into the quote rather than appearing as an extra on the day.
What sets the price of a removal to Northern Ireland?
How much you are moving, whether you book a dedicated van or a part load, the ferry crossing, how much packing you want us to do, and the access at both ends. The sailing is a real cost, which is why a part load often works out well here.
There is no customs element, so beyond the crossing it is volume, distance, labour and access, in the same way as any domestic move.
We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.
We also handle removals to the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, alongside house moves across England. Sending less than a full household? Part load removals explains shared loads.

Removals to Northern Ireland: frequently asked questions
Do I need customs paperwork for my furniture?
No. You are moving your own home within the United Kingdom, so there is no declaration and no duty on your belongings. The trading rules people have read about concern commercial goods moved by businesses, not a household move.
Which ferry will my things travel on?
Cairnryan to Larne or Belfast from Scotland and the north, or Liverpool and Birkenhead to Belfast from further south. The choice depends on where you are starting, the volume and the sailing times that fit your date.
How far ahead should I book?
Earlier than for a mainland move. Sailings have to be reserved and summer and holiday periods fill up, so booking as soon as your date is firm genuinely matters on this route.
What if the ferry is cancelled?
It is uncommon but weather does occasionally delay a sailing. Your coordinator will tell you the contingency when you book rather than leaving you to discover it, and the plan allows for it on exposed dates.
Is a move to the Republic of Ireland the same?
No, that is a customs move with real paperwork, which catches people out because the island feels like one place. Our removals to Ireland page explains the difference.
Can you store my things between moves?
Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is useful when your dates do not line up or when a sailing does not fall on the day you complete.
Is my move insured?
Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
