How do removals to Scotland from England work?
A move to Scotland is a domestic removal, so there is no customs paperwork, no inventory for an agent and no border formality of any kind. We survey your home, pack and wrap everything, load a dedicated van or a part load, and drive it north to your new address.
That makes it simpler than any of our overseas routes, and it means the things worth planning are the ones that actually cause trouble on a long UK move: the distance, the date, and whether your Scottish purchase has reached the point where the date is real.
One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery.
How long does a removal to Scotland take?
Your schedule is confirmed on your quote and is built around your completion date rather than a transit time. The real question on a long domestic move is whether it runs as a single day or needs an overnight, and that depends on the distance, the volume and the access at both ends.
A move from the south of England to the central belt is a very different job from one to Inverness or Thurso, and both are different again from a move that ends with an island ferry.
Tell your coordinator the two addresses and the date you are working towards, and you get a plan rather than an estimate.
Is the moving date different in Scotland?
Yes, and it is the single most important difference. Scottish house purchases do not exchange contracts the way English ones do. The deal becomes binding when missives are concluded, and from that point your date of entry is fixed rather than provisional.
For a removal that is good news. In England a moving date is a hope until exchange, which is often only a week or two before completion. In Scotland, once missives are concluded, you are working to a date everybody is committed to.
The practical consequence is worth acting on: book the removal as soon as missives conclude, because the date is real and good crews on a long run get booked up. If you are selling in England and buying in Scotland you are managing both systems at once, which is exactly when a removal firm that understands the difference earns its keep.
What else should I sort out before moving to Scotland?
The usual address changes, plus a few Scotland-specific ones. Property tax in Scotland is Land and Buildings Transaction Tax rather than Stamp Duty, water charges normally appear on your council tax bill, and you register with a GP in the local health board area.
None of that affects your removal, but all of it lands in the same fortnight, which is why it is worth having a list rather than discovering each item in turn.
Our moving house checklist covers the UK-wide jobs in order, and your coordinator will flag anything specific to your route.
Which route do you take to Scotland?
Normally the M6 and A74(M) to the central belt, or the A1 up the east coast for Edinburgh and the Borders. Beyond Perth the A9 carries most Highland traffic, and anything to the islands finishes with a ferry crossing that has to be booked around.
Winter genuinely matters on this route. The A9 and the A82 can be slow or closed in bad weather between roughly November and March, and an island ferry can be cancelled outright in a gale.
We plan around that rather than hoping, and if your date falls in midwinter your coordinator will say what the contingency is before you book.
Can I send a part load to Scotland?
Yes, and on a long domestic run it often saves a great deal. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings actually take on a shared vehicle rather than paying for a whole van to drive four hundred miles half empty.
The trade-off is the schedule. A shared load works to a route and a departure window, so a dedicated van is what gives you a guaranteed date, which matters if you are moving on a fixed date of entry.
The survey settles which fits and we quote both. There is more on our part load removals page.
Which parts of Scotland do you deliver to?
We move households across the whole of Scotland, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Stirling, Inverness, Fort William and the Borders, as well as the Highlands, Argyll and the islands where the final leg involves a ferry crossing.
Edinburgh and Glasgow tenement flats are the access question people underestimate: shared stairs, no lift, restricted parking and permit requirements are all normal, and a crew without a parking permit loses hours.
Highland and island addresses bring the opposite problem, with single track roads and passing places where a full-size lorry is impractical. In both cases the solution goes in the quote rather than appearing on the day.
What sets the price of a removal to Scotland?
How much you are moving, whether you book a dedicated van or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, the distance, and the access at both ends. Stairs, parking permits and single track roads add crew and time in a way the mileage alone does not.
Because there is no customs element on a domestic move, the price is simply volume, distance, labour and access, which makes it one of the more predictable quotes we give.
We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so rather than appearing later.
We also handle removals to Wales, Northern Ireland and Jersey, alongside house moves across England. Sending less than a full household? Part load removals explains shared loads.

Removals to Scotland: frequently asked questions
Is there any customs paperwork moving to Scotland?
None at all. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, so this is a domestic removal with no declarations, no inventory for an agent and no border of any kind. If anyone suggests otherwise they are thinking of Ireland or the Channel Islands.
When should I book?
As soon as missives are concluded on your Scottish purchase. At that point the date of entry is binding rather than provisional, so it is a real date, and long-distance crews get booked up.
Can you move me to an island?
Yes. The final leg involves a ferry, which has to be booked and which can be cancelled in bad weather, so island moves are planned with more slack than mainland ones. Tell us the destination early.
Can you get a lorry to a tenement flat?
Usually we can park nearby, but a permit or a suspended bay is often needed and shared stairs with no lift mean more crew and more time. Tell us the floor and the parking situation at the survey and it goes in the quote.
Do you pack as well?
Yes. Packing and unpacking are part of what we do, and on a long run they are worth having, because professionally packed goods travel far better over four hundred miles of motorway.
Can you store my things between moves?
Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire. That is useful when the Scottish date of entry and your English completion do not line up, which on a cross-border chain is common.
Is my move insured?
Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
