How do removals to Wales from England work?
A move to Wales is a domestic removal, so there is no customs paperwork and no border formality. We survey your home, pack and wrap everything, load a dedicated van or a part load, and deliver to your new address, with the access at the Welsh end usually the thing that shapes the day.
Wales is close enough that most moves from the Midlands or the south of England run comfortably within a day. What changes the job is rarely the distance, it is the last mile.
One coordinator runs the move from survey to delivery.
How long does a removal to Wales take?
Your schedule is confirmed on your quote and built around your completion date rather than a transit time. Most moves into south or north east Wales run as a single day from the Midlands or southern England; a remote rural address can need an overnight.
The variable is almost always the final approach. A property at the end of a mile of single track lane takes longer to unload than a terraced house in Cardiff, however short the motorway run was.
Tell your coordinator both addresses and the date you are working to and you get a plan rather than a guess.
Is there any customs or paperwork moving to Wales?
No. Wales is part of the United Kingdom, so a move there is domestic in every respect. There are no declarations, no inventory for a customs agent and no border. The only Welsh difference that touches a house move is a tax one, and it falls on your solicitor rather than on us.
That difference is Land Transaction Tax, which replaced Stamp Duty in Wales and has its own thresholds. Your conveyancer handles it, but it is worth knowing it exists if you are comparing the cost of a Welsh purchase with an English one.
Everything else, from council tax to utilities to registering with a GP, works the way it does anywhere in Britain. Our moving house checklist covers the lot in order.
What should I check before moving to rural Wales?
The access, honestly, and before you commit to a date. Lane width, overhanging trees, gateposts, bridge weight limits and whether a large vehicle can turn at the property are the things that decide whether a removal runs smoothly or turns into a shuttle operation.
None of that is a problem if we know in advance. A smaller vehicle, a transfer part way, or simply a different approach road is easy to arrange at the quoting stage and extremely difficult on the morning itself.
If you can, send a photograph of the approach and the parking when you book the survey. It is the single most useful thing a rural customer can give us.
Which route do you take to Wales?
South Wales is normally reached over the Severn crossings on the M4, which have been toll free since December 2018. Mid and north Wales are served by the A483, A5 and A55 along the north coast, and the mountain roads between them are slower than the map suggests.
That last point catches people out. North and south Wales are not well connected to each other by road, so a move from Cardiff to Anglesey can involve a longer drive than one from Cardiff to London.
Winter affects the upland routes, and the A55 can be busy in summer, both of which are planned around rather than hoped through.
Can I send a part load to Wales?
Yes. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings actually take on a shared vehicle rather than hiring a whole van, which suits anything smaller than a full house and is common on shorter domestic runs.
The trade-off is the schedule. A shared load works to a route and a departure window, so a dedicated van is what gives you a guaranteed date if you are moving on a fixed completion.
The survey settles which fits and we quote both. There is more on our part load removals page.
Which parts of Wales do you deliver to?
We move households across the whole of Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham, Bangor, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen, Llandudno and Haverfordwest, as well as the rural counties and the Pembrokeshire and Llyn coasts where lanes are narrow.
Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons and the Cambrian Mountains are where access planning earns its money, with gradients, passing places and farm tracks that a full-size lorry cannot take.
Where that is the case the final leg transfers to a smaller vehicle, which is planned into the quote rather than appearing as an extra on the day.
What sets the price of a removal to Wales?
How much you are moving, whether you book a dedicated van or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, the distance, and the access at both ends. A narrow lane needing a shuttle transfer costs more than the extra miles ever would.
With no customs element on a domestic move, the quote comes down to volume, distance, labour and access, which makes it one of the more predictable figures we give.
We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so.
We also handle removals to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Jersey, alongside house moves across England. Sending less than a full household? Part load removals explains shared loads.

Removals to Wales: frequently asked questions
Is there customs paperwork moving to Wales?
None. Wales is part of the United Kingdom and a move there is domestic in every respect, with no declarations and no border. The only Welsh difference is Land Transaction Tax, which your conveyancer deals with.
Can a big lorry reach a rural Welsh property?
Often not. Lane width, gateposts, overhanging trees and bridge weight limits are the usual obstacles, and the answer is a smaller vehicle or a transfer part way. Tell us at the survey and it is planned in.
Do the Severn crossings still have tolls?
No, they have been free since December 2018, which removed what used to be a standing cost on every move into south Wales.
Why is north to south Wales such a long drive?
Because the road network runs east to west on both coasts rather than north to south through the mountains. A move between north and south Wales can take longer than a run to London, which surprises people.
Can you move me on a single day?
Usually yes for south and north east Wales from the Midlands or southern England. A remote rural address or a very large house can need an overnight, and your coordinator will say which applies rather than leaving you to find out.
Can you store my things between moves?
Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is useful when your sale and purchase dates do not line up.
Is my move insured?
Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
