How do removals to Indonesia from the UK work?

Removals to Indonesia from the UK go by sea, in a full container or a part load sharing space with other households. We survey, pack and wrap everything, handle the export side here, and work with a Jakarta agent who clears the shipment against your work permit and residence permit.

Indonesia is the strictest destination on our Asian list for eligibility, and the rules changed in 2025. Before anything is quoted properly we check which visa you are arriving on, because that alone decides whether a household shipment makes sense.

One coordinator runs the move throughout, and the inventory built at the survey is what the clearance depends on.

How long do removals to Indonesia take?

Your transit time is confirmed in writing on your quote, because it depends on the sailing schedule and whether you book a full container or a part load. A part load waits for the container to fill before it sails, so it always takes longer than a container of your own.

There is a second clock on this route that matters more than the first. Indonesian guidance indicates your shipment should arrive within a few months of your own arrival and permit validation, so the sailing is planned backwards from that rather than forwards from collection.

Do I pay duty on my belongings going into Indonesia?

It depends entirely on your visa, and this is where Indonesia differs sharply from its neighbours. Under rules that took effect in 2025, relief is tied to holding a valid work visa and work permit with a residence permit of at least twelve months. Investor, business and retirement visa holders are not covered.

That last sentence is the one to read twice if you are retiring to Bali rather than relocating for work, because it changes the economics of the whole move. It does not stop you shipping, but it does mean planning for tax rather than assuming an exemption.

There is a second point even eligible movers should budget for: import VAT can apply to household shipments for foreign nationals even where duty relief is granted. Alcohol is prohibited within household shipments altogether, and every shipment is physically inspected.

Sources disagree on the exact regulation number and the position has changed recently, so we do not quote a rate on this page. Your coordinator has our Jakarta agent confirm your eligibility and the current treatment before anything is loaded.

What documents do I need for removals to Indonesia?

You will need your original passport, your work permit, your residence permit, a letter of employment, the transport document, an original inventory, and a packing list stamped by the Indonesian Embassy before the shipment leaves the UK. Your boarding pass is commonly asked for too.

The embassy stamp is the item that catches people out, because it has to happen at this end before your goods sail rather than at the far end afterwards. If it is missed, there is no fixing it once the container is at sea.

Both your work permit and residence permit normally need twelve months of validity. Tell your coordinator the dates on yours at the survey and the timing is planned around them.

Which Indonesian port will my shipment arrive at?

We route most household shipments through Jakarta, even for deliveries elsewhere in the country. Clearing in Jakarta is widely recommended to avoid the heavier inspections and delays that other entry points can bring, and the inland or inter-island leg is handled from there.

That matters particularly for Bali, where arriving by sea through the capital and moving on by road and ferry is often smoother than attempting entry closer to the destination.

Tell your coordinator the delivery address, including the island, and the routing is planned around it rather than defaulting to the nearest port on a map.

Can I send a part load to Indonesia?

Yes. A part load means you pay for the space your belongings occupy inside a shared container rather than hiring a whole one. Given the eligibility rules and the possibility of import VAT, sending less rather than more is often the sensible strategy on this route.

The packing and protection are identical either way. The difference is the schedule, because a shared container sails once it is full.

The survey settles which fits and we quote both so you can see the difference. There is more on our part load removals page.

Which parts of Indonesia do you deliver to?

We deliver across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Makassar and Denpasar on Bali, as well as towns reached by road and ferry from those cities. Indonesia is an archipelago, so the final leg often involves a crossing.

That is the structural difference between Indonesia and a mainland destination. An inter-island leg adds time and handling that a simple inland drive does not, and Bali deliveries in particular are planned as a two-stage journey rather than a single run.

Where a full-size lorry cannot reach the property, the final leg transfers to a smaller vehicle, which is planned into the quote.

What sets the price of removals to Indonesia?

How much you are sending, whether you book a full container or a part load, how much packing you want us to do, and whether your delivery needs an inter-island leg. The possible import VAT is the other real variable, and your quote states what has been allowed for.

Sea freight is priced on the space your goods occupy rather than their weight, which is why the survey beats a phone estimate.

We quote in writing with the inclusions listed, and anything excluded says so rather than appearing later.

Moving elsewhere in the region? We also run removals to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, and every route is on our Asia and Middle East destinations page. Sending less than a full household? See part load removals.

Removals to Indonesia: frequently asked questions

I am retiring to Bali. Do the same rules apply?

No, and this is the most important thing on this page for you. Under the 2025 rules, relief is tied to a work visa and work permit, and investor, business and retirement visa holders are not covered. You can still ship, but plan for tax rather than an exemption.

Indonesian clearance commonly requires the packing list to be stamped by the Indonesian Embassy before your goods leave the UK. It has to be done at this end, so it is arranged as part of the booking rather than left to the destination agent.

Guidance indicates the shipment should arrive within a few months of your arrival and permit validation, after which duties and taxes apply. We plan the sailing backwards from that date, so tell your coordinator your travel plans early.

No. Alcohol is prohibited within household shipments to Indonesia, and every shipment is physically inspected, so it is not something to risk. Your surveyor will go through the full restricted list.

Expect it. Physical inspection of household shipments is routine in Indonesia, which is why the inventory needs to be itemised and accurate rather than summarised.

Yes, at our own yard in Staffordshire, which is often the right call while the KITAS and work permit are being issued, because the clearance depends on them.

Cover is arranged against the value you declare, and the level of cover depends on that declaration and the terms in our agreement. Our guide to removals insurance explains it in full.
